The Kuki community deeply mourns the tragic fate of two innocent men — Thenggin Baite from Thawai Kuki Village and Thangboimang Khongsai from Shangkai Village.

Both of them had gone peacefully to fix a water connection for their village. They left happily, never imagining that they would be captured by NSCN-IM, along with Tangkhul volunteers and relatives’ volunteers. The two innocent men were brutally beaten blue and black and severely tortured. In a shocking act of cruelty, the nose of one of the victims was cut, reminding many of the brutality seen during the 2023 Manipur ethnic violence.

What pains the Kuki community even more is that Kuki people have always released members of the Tangkhul community peacefully whenever they were encountered, showing humanity and restraint. Yet such brutality is now being returned in this cruel manner.

Rest in peace Thenggin Baite and Thangboimang Khongsai.

The situation in Manipur, and particularly the relationship between the Tangkhuls and the Kuki community, has taken a new turn since yesterday.
Yesterday, i.e., 10 March 2026, the Manipur Police, along with the Indian Security Forces, cleared massive poppy cultivation in Sinakeithel Tangkhul village, spread across nearly 10 acres. On the intervening night of 10–11 March 2026, the #ZUF(K) attacked K. Songlung village, a Kuki village in Kangpokpi district. This has left innocent villagers traumatized and helpless, as this is the second time the village has come under attack from the same unlawful group. Security forces stationed near the village reportedly did nothing to prevent the attack.
Today (Thursday, 11 March 2026), members of the NSCN-IM, reportedly under the guise of Tangkhul village volunteers, opened fire on farmers from Thowai Kuki village. Several villagers have reportedly been detained by the militants, and a number of jhum huts have been gutted. Two other Kuki villagers are also reported missing as of now. It is further reported that one man was detained and shot in the feet by the same illegal militants.
It is suspected that these incidents may be linked to yesterday’s poppy destruction operation.
However, the destruction of a poppy farm should never become a reason for targeting innocent civilians or triggering a senseless conflict, especially when both communities are heavily armed and the painful memories of the 1990s conflict remain fresh.

The reason the Kuki community says it cannot trust the so-called @manipur_police is the repeated allegation that Meitei militant groups have used police uniforms and weapons to carry out attacks against Kuki civilians in the hill areas of Kukiland, which are largely inhabited and surrounded by Kuki communities.

Groups such as United National Liberation Front (UNLF-MPA) and Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), along with alleged Myanmar-based Meitei militants, are accused of moving freely while wearing uniforms resembling those of state forces. At the same time, operations by central forces under the Government of India in the hill districts are said to have led to the detention of innocent civilians, while concerns about Meitei militant activities remain unaddressed.

Because of these experiences, many in the Kuki community say they have lost trust in the state security structure in Manipur. They state that, until neutrality and security guarantees are ensured, they do not want personnel they perceive as biased to be deployed in their areas.

No political solution, no peace.
