Kuno's ashes will be going to the ocean. Thank you so much for supporting us in this journey. But this is a bittersweet post about a house. I mentioned any extra funds raised will go towards a wheelchair accessible house with a yard.
I'll never be able to afford it on my own, but I have a very close friend and we talked about the possibility of sharing a place. We both pay a fair bit in rent, our dogs get along, and for quite some time, they've been the person I rely on when life falls apart.
Well, a wheelchair accessible house came on the market. It was close to perfect. A really well constructed ramp to the front door, a lift from the back deck to the patio in the fenced yard. A garage. A finished basement with a full second kitchen. The bathroom might need some work to be easy to use, but it would be functional. I need to point out, it was one of only 2 accessible houses for sale in the entire region. The other was so far out of the price range it wasn't worth even discussing.
I tried hard not to get my hopes up. But I envisioned how much easier winter would be if I could just let dogs out in -25°C instead of putting on leggings, jeans, sweatpants, a sweatshirt, hoodie, heated throw and insulated poncho to go out for a 6 minute potty walk. I saw a backyard to easily work on off leash training. I pictured being able to take on a few training clients. And a puppy. Or a foster dog. Or even starting a service dog for someone else.
And the security of not having to move again. And having someone I trust in close proximity to help with things I'd struggle with, like snow removal, and being useful to them like being able to take their dog out midday or doing meal prep. I guess I saw the next stage of my life. A future.
However within days the house had multiple offers on it and sold before we could even arrange a viewing. I will admit, I was a little crushed. The frustrating part is that it's extremely unlikely the house was sold to someone who needed the accessibility modifications. It was reasonably priced so it may have gone to a young family, however it's quite likely it was bought by a developer who could put 2 tall skinny infills on the lot and sell them each for 100k more than the original house.
It's not often accessible homes come on the market. A handful a year. Maybe we'll get lucky and something affordable will come along again soon. I don't know if modifying a house is feasible. People tend to think it only involves a ramp, but in most cases, doorways need widening and bathrooms need to made significantly larger, and cupboards need to be pulled to get close enough to the sink. Sidewalks may need widening, and some way to access the yard needs to be built. The province has a grant program but it's only around 7K which might cover a ramp. The other challenge is that because pretty much every house built in the last 30 years is 2 stories without a full bath and bedroom on the mainfloor, it means looking at older places that likely need other modifications as well. It's still cheaper than installing an elevator to get to the bathroom. Though at this point, I'd probably figure out how to pee in the yard if it meant I could have a fenced safe space for the dog!
I really shouldn't have gotten my hopes up. For a moment the future looked really bright. And then it went away.
But we don't give up hope right? We'll figure out how to raise a little more. Keep watching the housing market. Try not to get disheartened.
So I now own 50 multicolored ping pong balls. Numbers 1 to 50. Chesnyy will start picking the lotto numbers because she has to be luckier than me. And it'll keep you guys entertained. ❤️

This is such sad news. Kuno was my hero and inspiration. He helped me when I first joined Twitter when I was a pup. A huge loss for his human and his many friends everywhere💔RIP Kuno.
