The backlash around Lanterns has not robbed me of my joy because I don’t need the rest of the internet to decide what I like for me.
But it does feel like a lot of the pushback isn’t from ‘comic book’ fans, it’s from ‘YouTube videos about comic books’ fans.
re-contextualizing Hal’s father’s death as a suicide instead of blowing up in a test flight was.. brutal. hal’s fearlessness coming from the inner turmoil + generational trauma and being broken gives you another layer to a character that is already one of the best in the DCU.
Are people really incapable of understanding that Hal breaking a suicidal family cycle because of his innate will power just further enhances him as a character and as a Green Lantern?
Episode 7 ending with kid Hal picking up the ball his father told him to throw away because it’s “exhausting” to hold onto it, sub-textually being a metaphor for living and how at some point it’s not worth it, is really damn good writing especially if it suggests what we think it does for the finale.
That man lost his newlywed wife while racing her from a lake in Italy to their honeymoon destination in Switzerland while he was driving a vintage Ferrari and her a seaplane ?
Yeah that shit would rewire my whole nervous system too. Everybody dying.
My favourite Kirkversary moment was when Nigerian Pentecostal Christians started using Charlie as a symbol of religious freedom and martyrdom when a simple Google search would have shown how much he hated black people.
