I attended @MaddieJSouthLit presentation on how important diversity is in classroom literature. It was so interesting to hear that there are many books that include diverse characters that we could introduce to classrooms as alternatives to what is normally required #tsusouthlit

I wonder if Dana knew subconsciously that she had to kill Rufus in the end. Her only goal was to make sure that Hagar was born but what was her purpose after that? I wonder if Rufus hadn’t been as violent and vile to her, would she have kept going back to the 1800s? #tsusouthlit

@MaddieJSouthLit Rufus really through me for a loop. I knew that it was common for slaves to be brutally raped by white owners, but I was expecting Rufus to turn out differently due to Dana’s presence/influence. I thought he and Alice would have a love story but oh no I was wrong. #tsusouthlit

At this part I was so shocked by Kevin’s thoughtlessness. I understand that he is sheltered by his privilege in 1819, but his own wife is considered a slave in this time period for god sake! Thinking that this is a great time period to live in shows his privilege. #TSUSouthLit

I was really not expecting Kevin to go back with Dana to the 1800s! I wonder if it will cause the two to grow closer together in order to survive or just end up highlighting the differences b/t them that are significant in this time period. #TSUSouthLit

@koalakween @MaddieJSouthLit #tsusouthlit I’m glad we talked in class about that “non-apology” he gave Jo towards the end of the novel. I’m not surprised that Jo didn’t call him out on it. It seems like she lets others treat her badly and just carries on. A prime example is her relationship Dana.

It was really interesting to discuss more about Jo’s dad and his motive behind asking Jo to hide herself. It felt like he kept blaming those around him for intolerance (vague assumptions about 3 and how she will handle it)but I never really saw any intolerance from 3 #TSUSouthLit

I felt like Jo could have told Mary Carlson the reasons on why she felt she couldn’t come out in Rome. The worst case senario was that they broke up... and that ended up happening without the truth. I think Mary C would be understanding if she knew the real reasons. #TSUSouthLit

(When Jo comes back to Atlanta to visit Dana) I felt like Dana’s reaction in this moment was so uncalled for. Ironically it seems like Dana is the most judgmental of everyone. #tsusouthlit

I think this would have been a good quote to look at in terms of how Linda and Kelly would have seen Dolly. They did have their own idea of her and what it meant to them. They cherished her even though they didn’t know her. #tsusouthlit

#tsusouthlit I wonder why Fannie Flagg let Evelyn have some real life connections with some of the people Ninny told her of (sitting next to Jasper’s eldest child in church, seeing Idgie’s letter to Ruth at her gravesite) but didn’t let her truly meet them(at least the living 1s)
