Go @ZackPolanski ! Speaking truth to power and thank you for mentioning Benjamin Zephaniah’s poem and for your forthcoming visit to Handsworth on #BBCQT@bbcquestiontime
Dad’s books are full of empathy, common sense, and a healthy suspicion of the powerful. But at its heart his work is also about how systems keep people poor while pretending it’s their own fault. So I hope Kemi’s taking notes as well as reading the jokes.
Lord Sumption, former supreme court judge, says Robert Jenrick's plan for lord chancellor (justice sec) to appoint judges would be serious mistake.
"If judges were appointed in today’s polarised world by the lord chancellor, I do not think the public would have the same confidence in their independence.
"They’re actually appointed by the judicial appointments commission, which is an independent, non-political body, and it looks for the same qualities in the judges it appoints.
"The only possible reason for going back to the old system would be to appoint judges who were less independent or more political than the ones appointed by the judicial appointments commission.
"In the United States, the supreme court has become subservient to the president and enabled him to behave like an autocrat. I think that that is a very serious business in the United States, and we should be very careful to take take warning from it."

All of our boats are still sailing - and we are so close now!
We are nearing 110 nautical miles from Gaza, around the point at which the Madleen was intercepted in June.
Some of us managed to sleep a bit this morning. This is important, because Israel is probably deliberately trying to drive us to exhaustion.
We believe the Spanish navy is still nearby, although Italy has left. It’s reportedly keeping some distance, but planning to continue to 24 miles from the coast of Gaza 🍉🍉
We feel calm and determined.
@JamesEsses 1. Has it occurred to you that
those students are British - they just aren’t white skinned.
2. Name the University and the date/time you visited. We’ll check your claim.
@JamesEsses James, You’re being disingenuous.
1. If you don’t have a problem with their skin colour, why mention ‘diversity’? People would have significantly more respect for you if you were honest.
2. Which University? Name the time and date.
3. Address @DrSteveTaylor’s data
‘I was born in Tooting. Where am I going to go?’
Sadiq Khan challenges Sarah, who claims there’s ‘too many brown faces in London’ and ‘immigrants need to go home.’
This is the reality for a lot of visibly Muslim women in the UK. I don't particularly enjoy constantly reporting on Islamophobia but this is personal to me. Those journalists who continue to fan the flames of bigotry need to understand the consequences of their hate.
A child cries while carrying his younger sister on his shoulders, walking along the long displacement route from northern Gaza to the south... a scene that captures the suffering of innocent children under the horrors of war.
After a 20 yr old Sikh woman was viciously assaulted and raped & told 'you don't belong here, get out' 37+ UK South Asian, Black, migrant, refugee & antiracist organisations demand justice for the survivor, tell #Starmer to stop pandering to far-right 1/n https://t.co/t3EnZOSk7F
