यदि विपक्षी उम्मीदवार का नामांकन ही विवादित तरीके से खारिज हो जाए और फिर उस पर जश्न मनाया जाए, तो यह लोकतांत्रिक मूल्यों के अनुरूप नहीं लगता।

#UPDATE | Supreme Court to hear tomorrow Congress leader Meenakshi Natarajan’s plea challenging rejection of her Rajya Sabha nomination papers

Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi today mentioned the matter before a bench of Justices PK Mishra and Atul S. Chandurkar, describing it as a genuinely urgent case and seeking either an early listing or a one-line interim order. Taking note of the submissions, the Supreme Court listed the matter for hearing tomorrow.

Arguing that the Returning Officer wrongly rejected Natarajan’s nomination for allegedly failing to disclose a pending criminal case, Singhvi submitted, “Only summons was issued (against her), not even a cognisance of the case. The Returning Officer disqualifies her.” The plea contends that the Returning Officer acted illegally, arbitrarily and with bias, and seeks the immediate setting aside of the decision rejecting her nomination papers.

Rejecting Smt. Meenakshi Natarajan ji’s nomination to the Rajya Sabha is a blatant attempt by the BJP to destroy the democratic process in a clandestine manner. The allegation of any error or non-disclosure in her nomination is complete humbug and a desperate attempt to snatch a seat from the INC.

They stooped so low as to reject her nomination when they realised that their dirty tricks to compromise our INC MLAs is going to fail.

This shows the BJP’s hollow commitment to the Constitution and democracy. At every step of the way, they are hell-bent on Vote Chori - one way or another.

We will not take this daylight robbery of democracy lying down, and will fight this legally as well as politically on the streets tooth-and-nail.

Opponent’s nomination cancelled & Opponent defeated are not the same thing.
Celebrating the first as if it were the second is like winning a match because the other team wasn’t allowed onto the field. Strange definition of victory for a democracy.

So the nomination gets cancelled, the candidate is out, and celebrations begin. Interesting.
In a democracy, defeating an opponent through votes is understandable. Celebrating a nomination cancellation over a technicality is a strange victory to boast about.
