In 1526, the king of Kongo wrote to the king of Portugal and begged him to stop the slave trade.
The letters still exist. You can read them.

King Afonso I — Nzinga Mbemba.

He was not a victim of ignorance about Europe. He was literate in Portuguese, Catholic, and had welcomed Portuguese traders as partners. Then he watched what the trade actually did.

He writes that merchants are seizing people every day — nobles, family members, free subjects — and that his country is being emptied. He asks for teachers and doctors instead of ships. He asks, plainly, for it to stop.

Portugal's king replied with a letter pointing out how profitable Kongo's trade was and how little else it had to offer.

The trade continued for another three hundred years and helped destroy the kingdom.

An African head of state put his objection in writing in 1526, in the language of the people doing it, and was told the arithmetic did not work in his favour.

"They didn't know" has never been available as an excuse. The correspondence is in the archives.

🚨 HELP US FIND WHO KILLED ZANELE PRECIOUS NKOSI

Zanele was 41. A daughter. A mother to an 8-year-old girl. An attorney who served her community and chaired the North West Black Lawyers Association.

On 29 March 2023, she left her office in Rustenburg and walked to her Mercedes-Benz. Two men approached her and shot her multiple times in the head and upper body.

She died there. In broad daylight. Outside her workplace.

Her 8-year-old daughter lost her mother. Her 72-year-old mother lost her daughter. A family already grieving another daughter who had died just months earlier was left with another devastating loss.

More than three years later, they are still waiting for answers.

A R150,000 reward was announced in May 2025 for information leading to an arrest and conviction. But the motive remains unknown and no one has been brought to justice.

Someone knows what happened to Zanele.

WARNING | Women in and around Kempton Park, particularly the Rhodesfield area, must exercise extreme caution following the discovery of the bodies of four women in the same area over a period of approximately two months.

The latest body was discovered on Saturday evening.

Preliminary information gathered by detectives indicates concerning similarities in the circumstances surrounding the deaths. The bodies of the women were found half naked and with visible bruising, and the discovery sites are located within the same vicinity.

While investigations are still underway and SAPS has not, at this stage, confirmed that the deaths are linked to a serial killer, the similarities are sufficiently concerning for the police to issue a public warning and intensify investigations.

Women in and around Kempton Park are urged not to walk or run alone, particularly in isolated areas. They should avoid secluded spaces, remain vigilant and, where possible, travel or exercise in groups.

The safety of women remains a priority for SAPS, and the police will not wait for further incidents before taking decisive action.
