I still remember a cold, blustery rainy night in Hermanus, 1998. Two people murdered on the road to Stanford past Voelklip. Suspect — a dismissed former cop — armed and holding his ex-girlfriend hostage.
I was in the search van with a Sergeant, positioned off Voelklip Circle. Then two Ford Falcons rolled through like they were one vehicle.
The Taakies had arrived from Cape Town.
We quietly headed back to the command point and watched them work. No ego, no shouting orders. They assessed the situation calmly, shared their plan, thanked everyone for their efforts, and got to business. Pure professionalism.
Once the suspect heard the Special Task Force was on scene, he released the hostage and surrendered soon after.
I saw them in action many more times — armed robbers in Grabouw, poachers in Gansbaai and at sea.
They remain the best special operations unit I’ve ever witnessed. No other team, military or police, has ever matched them for me.
