@gecgreek@JoyceCarolOates I'm not even going to deign to respond to your claim that movie Paul is Odysseus-like cuz like well.. not at all really, they're on very different journeys and if you don't see that this convo has become even less interesting to me than it already was soo toodles.
@gecgreek@JoyceCarolOates Now its apparent that your actual issue is 'He's not the same character" which is fair but also beyond the point. He made an adaptation choice, you disagree with it. That's a matter of taste therefore a pointless discussion to me since I don't care about yours no offense.
@gecgreek@JoyceCarolOates Tv shows have deeper characterizations than most movies due to time afforded and if you tell me you believe Paul Atreides in the Dune movies is as complex as his book counterpart or as og Odysseus could be across a whole poem I simply do not believe you.
Kavinsky, the French music producer and DJ whose hypnotic anthem “Nightcall” became a cult classic after opening Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Drive,” has died. He was 50.
The artist was found dead at his Paris home on Tuesday evening. Authorities have opened an investigation into the circumstances of his death, though no foul play has been reported. https://t.co/k33pKpLXte
@Variable_Gear@wtflanksteak I further said if by that term you mean "Secondary character who happens to be black" your point is so broad that the term loses its meaning. You refuse to define the term. This feels pointless and it's late. Have a good one lmao thank you for reminding why I don't engage on here
@Variable_Gear@wtflanksteak Is this supposed to be a gotcha? AHAHAH Jesus Christ let me explain my sentence. Cory Hawkins plays a role in which he has his own goals vis a vis the throne of Ithaca. I explained to you the original meaningful of the term "Black Best Friend". He can't even vaguely be that.
@Variable_Gear@wtflanksteak It is left open ended on purpose obviously but most of the people I saw it with agreed that the Gods are indeed real unless you think three quarters of the fantastical elements of the movie are imagined then cool for you that's not the version of the movie I saw!
@Variable_Gear@wtflanksteak If you think she's making a coherently point based on that paragraph idk what to tell you. We read differently and I don't feel the need to steel man anything to win an argument online.
@Variable_Gear@wtflanksteak Now we're at the part of the argument in which you put words in my mouth and it stops being fun. The trope specifically emerged to highlight black people used to prop up white protagonists and to show them as "cool" and sometimes "not racist* while removing black interiority.
@Variable_Gear@wtflanksteak Himesh Patel which she mentioned, is not black and even if he were has a specific and well defined role as head of the mutiny. If you extend the trope to mean any secondary character who happens to be black it loses all meaning and you might as well not say it at all.
@Variable_Gear@wtflanksteak Also "Haunting victims of male violence" Zendaya is both the priestess AND Athena the goddess and in the original text Helen is a victim? Lupita also plays another character who does kill Agamemnon. Idk maybe SHE SHOULDN'T flatten brown and black people. Doesn't seem that hard.
@Variable_Gear@wtflanksteak She's an academic and words have meaning. She should have said the secondary characters are underutilized and kept it pushing
Using black people as cudgels to hit Nolan with is crazy to me. She even specifically mentions Himesh Patel who is not at all underutilized.
@Variable_Gear@wtflanksteak Define black Best Friend in your own words and tell me how Himesh Patel, Cory Hawkins, Zendaya AND lupita in both roles fit that. Go ahead. She herself says "Provide aid to the white protagonist" Himesh on top of not being black is a clear foil and the voice of the crew.
it just feels like every time yall see a nonwhite person in a movie you’re waiting for them to justify why they’re there and why they aren’t white. can’t they just be there? can people just be around? is that allowed? does everything have to be a statement? are you 12?
@marsibun She either wanted an all white cast as to not project her issues on the cast or poc can't be secondaries characters in anything because in her eyes they'll fulfill some weird trope? How is Cory Hawkins a trope in this when he's simply a secondary villain/rival to antinous?
@marsibun She is an academic and I believe she has better command of the language than this charitable characterization insinuates. The primary characters are all blood relatives of Odysseus. Had she said she wanted them all as a poc I'd understand but that's not what she said innit.
@Variable_Gear@wtflanksteak They are at best uncomfortable allies and in truth rivals for Penelope. People hate Nolan's exposition but damn apparently more was needed.
