It’s a very simple read. 🌳 What is clear and already known is that public companies will be required to report their scope 1 and 2 emissions. A few things that caught my eyes while skimming through the Final Rules, especially regarding why scope 3 emissions were not considered: 1️⃣ Companies such as Amazon & Fidelity argued about the cost associated with reporting scope 3 emissions and how the data does not meet the materiality threshold as it’s rather speculative. I argue: Why is it not costly to pay lobbyists to deceive investors and the public. 2️⃣ There’s a lack of specificity in enforcement, and the final rule uses aspects of the GHG Protocol and TFCD. 3️⃣ The SEC will mandate public companies to disclose costs and expenses tied to severe weather, carbon offsets, and RECs in financial statements. There were ample comments by investors seeking this data for informed decision-making. All in all, as I delve a bit deeper into an 'Opinion' piece on the https://t.co/lZqRzBUxvU website, today's approval shows how, in this new economy (depending on the sector), there's a continuous need for rules. The rules that might have worked for an old economy need whistleblowers from within public companies and their external goods and services providers to ensure that new rules function effectively.
