Embracing Innovation in Classical Music: Interview with Max Beckham-Ortner
๐ต In March, we had Max Beckham-Ortner (Secretary General at @IMZMedia) at our MusicTech Conference. In this interview, he shared insights on the evolving landscape of classical music and arts in the digital age.
During the interview, Beckham-Ortner emphasized the importance of engaging younger audiences in classical music through modern storytelling and digital platforms. He stated: "They are crucial. [...] In order to engage a new audience who might not have a [classical background], we have to tell them a story... And getting their attention is only possible if we access them where they are, like on TikTok, YouTube, and other social media channels." What role does the so-called "serious art" play for todayโs youth? Beckham-Ortner expressed that there is still a significant audience for traditional live performances: โBut I also think [...] that it's important to have more of an entertaining art as well, again, to engage a new audience. Because that's maybe how you get hooked.โ Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of blending entertaining art forms to capture the interest of newcomers, suggesting that even a lighter event like an Andrรฉ Rieu concert could lead to greater appreciation and attendance at major classical music festivals like the Salzburger Festspiele.
Addressing the future of opera, Beckham-Ortner was optimistic about its potential to attract younger people through lower prices and the use of digital media to increase awareness: "It has to work again together with the different broadcasters or streaming platforms simply in order to get their attention in the first place. Because a lot of people might not even know that the Salzburg Festival is happening.โ
The impact of artificial intelligence on the arts was another important topic. Beckham-Ortner discussed the ongoing and future changes AI is expected to bring, particularly through VR headsets. He noted: "AI had an impact and will even have a further impact on our industryโฆ Over the next five years, I think we'll have at least a small revolution within the industry."
Thank you for the interview!

๐ถ๐ป Our Karajan MusicTech conference earlier in March was an absolute blast. Thanks to the Volkswagen Group Culture for the long-lasting collaboration โ and this lovely recap video: https://t.co/nijtcC3SXn
We're thrilled about this partnership, because it enables a dialogue between mobility and art. It has always been our goal to connect visionaries and decision-makers in music and tech, Volkswagen Group Culture is a wonderful partner and enabler for that.
This edition of the conference has shown the growing influence of music on AI and the potential for immersive technologies in the world of automotive innovation.
In the Video, @matthiasroder highlights the conferenceโs interdisciplinary approach: โWe bring together artists, engineers, people from the business world, start-ups and investors. And the idea is: through the discourse between the different disciplines, we keep developing creative, new ideas which then become reality. [...] Companies have been founded here, projects have been launched. We have built apps in hackathons. So, itโs a colorful bunch with a lot of creativity.โ
@NikolaiArdey (@VWGroup Innovation): โVolkswagen is really passionate about this inspiring and long lasting collaboration.โ We agree! Itโs our goal to push the boundaries of innovation. Thatโs why we try to shape innovation from many different angles: From cognitive neuroscientists like Arne Dietrich to experimental artists like Moisรฉs Horta (@hexorcismos) โ the role of interdisciplinarity is critical when it comes to innovating Music and Tech.
Neuroscientist Arne Dietrich explains why the Music Industry is at the forefront of technological innovation:ย โBecause music is quite structured, which is not the case for other arts. So technology has already infiltrated the world of music more so than other arts.โ
Thank you all for adding so many different perspectives to our conference!

Concepts such as Extended Reality (XR) and Virtual Reality (VR), which expand visual and auditory dimensions of experience, are increasingly gaining importance in the performing arts. The presentation initially provides an overview of previous projects in this area. Subsequently, it offers a perspective on the plans of the X-Reality Lab at the University of Mozarteum. The lab is conceived as an experimental space where performance art and extended audio-visual experiences are innovatively combined.

๐ถ From Herbert von Karajan to Karajan MusicTech โ Reflecting on the Intersection of #ClassicalMusic and #Innovation
Salzburg is the birthplace of two legends of music: Mozart and Herbert von Karajan. Now that our @KarajanMusic Tech Conference is taking place this week, itโs time to remember the profound impact Herbert von Karajan had on both the Classical Music world and the realm of technological innovation. But it's not just about looking back; it's about moving forward and embracing the fusion of tradition with cutting-edge innovation.
@matthiasroder (CEO of the Karajan Institute), reflects on Karajan's legacy: "Herbert von Karajan was also one of the pioneers and music visionaries of his time. And for us, it makes perfect sense to continue in his vein, to bring innovation and classical music together. [...] It's one of the things that made him into an absolute superstar โ to be always on the cutting edge of new technology and being out there to bring his recordings out to as many people as possible."
Where was von Karajan actually an innovator?
โ Early Adopter of Stereo Recording: Karajan was among the first conductors to recognize the potential of stereo recording technology. In the 1950s, he began producing recordings in stereo, well before it became the standard. This approach provided listeners with a more immersive and dynamic listening experience, closely mimicking the experience of being in a concert hall.
โก Pioneering Digital Recordings: In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Karajan was at the forefront of adopting digital recording techniques. He was one of the first to record classical music using digital technology, working with labels like Deutsche Grammophon to produce some of the earliest digital recordings. This move was instrumental in enhancing the clarity and quality of classical music recordings.
โข Utilizing Video and Film: Karajan understood the power of visual media in expanding the reach of classical music. He was a pioneer in filming his rehearsals and performances, contributing significantly to the production of classical music for television and home video. This not only helped in popularizing classical music but also provided an educational resource for students and enthusiasts.
โฃ Innovative Stagecraft and Lighting: Beyond audio technology, Karajan also experimented with innovative stagecraft and lighting in his productions. He believed that the visual aspect of a performance was crucial in enhancing the audience's experience. Karajan's approach to opera productions, for example, integrated sophisticated lighting designs and stage settings that were ahead of their time.
โคSupporting the Development of the Compact Disc: Karajan played a key role in the development and popularization of the compact disc (CD). He collaborated with electronics companies, notably Sony and Philips, to present the format to the world in a globally televised press conference. Did you know that the length of the CD is based on Karajan's timings for the 9th symphony?
Here's to the pioneers, past and future, who dare to dream and innovate. Let's continue to break boundaries and create new pathways in the world of music. ๐๐ผ

๐ต๐ค โAI is an amazing writing partner.โ โ Music composer @walterwerzowa and @thomasrichter discuss the #Beethoven AI Project, a collaboration between humans and AI in composing music. Walter shares his experience working with #ArtificialIntelligence, initially skeptical about disregarding traditional music rules. He learned from AI scientist @ahmed_elgammal that AI does not need to adhere to constraints, and it neutrally absorbs everything from Beethoven, including mistakes, which becomes part of its learning process.
Walter realized that sticking strictly to the rules would not produce the unique sound he achieved with the AI. His role in the project was creatively significant, likening it to Beethoven's process of selecting melodies: He received hundreds of AI-generated options every morning and had to choose the ones that aligned with his taste and intuition.
Thomas asked: โWere you always enjoying it or sometimes thinking: โOh, this is a competition for me in the future!โ? Or were you liking it, embracing it?โ Walter: โNo, it's an amazing writing partner where I do something and then I react to it and it's going back and forth. It's an alter(ed) ego.โ
