We are delighted to welcome contemporary artist Anindita Bhattacharya, our 2024 Frere Hall South Asian Artist-In-Residence. Anindita, the @UniofOxford’s first Indian artist-in-residence, will be based within our Department of Eastern Art to closely view and handle objects. We hope this access to our collection will inspire her to create new works in response to objects from our Asian collections and beyond.

In her artistic practice, Anindita takes inspiration from the visual languages forged in the Mughal courts of Delhi, Agra and Lahore, and reconfigures them through a contemporary lens to create works that blur the lines between traditional and contemporary, the East and West, and representation and abstraction. Of the residency, the artist says:

‘I feel incredibly honoured to be the artist in residence at the Ashmolean Museum. Access to the Museum's collections in person, especially the Eastern Art collections, holds immense significance for me. Since my formative years I have been drawn to the linguistic and aesthetic nuances of the art of manuscript illumination, particularly Mughal and by extension Persian manuscripts. A pivotal aspect of my artistic expression revolves around fostering a connection between tradition and contemporary discourse. So this opportunity to explore and engage with collections from Eastern Art not only enriches my artistic practice but also deepens my understanding of the cultural and historical context.’
