False. On the contrary, the Turkish invasion violated the Treaty.

Cyprus declared its independence from British rule in 1960. The Treaty of Guarantee said that it "recognized and guaranteed the independence, territorial integrity and security of the Republic of Cyprus." It was signed by Britain, Greece, Turkey and Cyprus.

Fourteen years later, however, Turkey violated the treaty and invaded Cyprus twice: on July 20 and on August 18, 1974. What followed was ethnic cleansing through forcible displacement.

To mark the 52nd anniversary of the Cyprus Peace Operation, the Türk Yıldızları (Turkish Stars) and SOLOTÜRK - the aerobatic teams of the Turkish Air Force - took to the skies above Northern Cyprus, painting the crescent and star across the blue.

Fifty-two years after the Mehmetçik first arrived to bring peace to the island, the same flag flies overhead - a reminder of the bond between Türkiye and the Turkish Cypriot people, and of the freedom that bond secured.

Greek Cypriots rarely hear this, but the 1974 Turkish Peace Operation reshaped the region’s stability:
1️⃣ Stopped EOKA-B: Ended Nikos Sampson's fascist coup and saved Greek Cypriots from brutal internal bloodshed.
2️⃣ Restrained Advance: Türkiye secured 37% of the island to protect Turkish Cypriots, despite possessing the military capability to take the entire island in hours.
3️⃣ Population Exchange: Instead of total expulsion, a structured bilateral exchange was chosen to minimize chaos.
4️⃣ Restored Democracy: The intervention collapsed the military junta in Athens, paving the way for democracy in Greece.
History is far more nuanced than political narratives suggest.

If our interest is to keep a united front against Russia, we can't undermine the strategic interests of southern member states. EU ignored Greece’s existential threats from Turkey for years, yet now clutches pearls calling Athens “shameless” for protecting its own interests. You can't exercise selective "European solidarity" and then act surprised when undermined members prioritize their own survival. We need to fix the hypocrisy or watch this story repeat itself many times more.
