WAI remembers longtime member Wally Funk, who passed away peacefully on July 8, 2026 in Grapevine, Texas, at age 87, surrounded by loved ones.

Wally graduated first in her flight class at Stephens College, excelled at Oklahoma State, and became the first woman ever hired to flight instruct—at just 20 years old. In 1961 she was one of the Mercury 13, acing NASA's astronaut testing only to be barred from space due to her gender. She didn't let that stop her: first female FAA inspector, first woman in the FAA's System Airworthiness Analysis Program, one of the NTSB's first female air safety investigators. She trained 3,000+ pilots and logged 30,000+ flight hours.

WAI inducted Wally into our Pioneer Hall of Fame in 1995—and in 2021, at age 82, she finally flew to space aboard Blue Origin, becoming the oldest woman ever to do so.

A trailblazer. A role model. A friend to WAI. Thank you, Wally. 🕊️
