It’s been a very tough week of this Canadian winter ❄️ for people without homes. We’re all watching Edmonton, where police dragged people out of their tents and tore down encampments as temps dropped to -40 (!!)

Here in Vancouver, even with 14 day’s notice that a polar vortex was on the way, the city waited until it was below freezing to enact a series of daily “bylaw enforcements” in Oppenheimer Park where they “simply asked” campers to pack up their belongings “to enable the whole community to have access to the park.” And then, according to some accounts, as the campers began to pack up, park rangers took their tents & belongings and threw them away 😤

The City’s X account says people can warm up in community centres, but there are also accounts of access being denied to people seeking shelter because programming takes priority. COME ON.

Homelessness is up by 16% in Vancouver and by 32% in our region, according to last year’s homeless count.

I hate to join those mocking the City of Vancouver’s newfound focus on “swagger” and fun, but @KenSimCity, why did you wait until temps dropped to -20 (w. windchill) to do this to people?

This isn’t fun. This isn’t how you build a vibrant city. I don’t try to speak for everyone, but most of us can manage without frolicking in a local park or taking skating lessons for the few days that a cold snap lasts.

Please do better. Have some compassion.
