They stole Maryam Salameh last night.

Not a soldier on a battlefield, but a beautiful young woman, full of life, dreams, memories and a future she had every right to believe was hers.

Terrorist Israel reached her in the supposed safety and comfort of her own home in the town of Maifadoun, southern Lebanon, with a bomb made in the United States of America, paid off with tax payers' money.

Another young life extinguished. Another family left staring at an absence that can never be filled. Another dream buried beneath the rubble of a country that has been taught, time and again, that international law applies selectively and that Lebanese lives can be destroyed with complete impunity.

And while Maryam's family mourns, Lebanon's political establishment continues to speak the language of sovereignty while surrendering its meaning.

At the very top stands a political order that has repeatedly asked the Lebanese people to place their faith in institutions that have proven incapable of protecting them from Israeli aggression. People were told to trust that the Lebanese Army would be strengthened, that the state would reclaim responsibility for defending its land and its people.

But what does sovereignty mean when Israeli warplanes can enter Lebanese skies, strike Lebanese homes, and kill Lebanese citizens?

What does trust mean when the very state presented as the alternative to resistance is unable or even unwilling to prevent its people from becoming targets?

For many Lebanese, the painful reality is becoming impossible to ignore: an army that is politically restrained, strategically constrained, and dependent on powers that arm and protect Israel cannot simply be presented as an independent shield against Israeli aggression. A nation cannot outsource its security to a political framework designed by those who tolerate its repeated violation.

Maryam paid the ultimate price for this hypocrisy.

Her death is not merely another number to be added to a casualty list. She was a person. A daughter. A young woman with dreams that will now remain forever unfinished.

And those who speak endlessly of "state sovereignty" should have the courage to explain to Maryam's family what sovereignty looks like when a US-made bomb can find its way into the home of a young Lebanese woman in the south and steal her future.

Rest in peace, Maryam.

Your life was precious. Your dreams mattered. And no amount of political rhetoric will ever make the silence surrounding your killing any less shameful.

The mosque in the Saharanpur Collectorate was demolished at 5 AM this morning.

Does the constitutional guarantee of freedom of religion no longer apply to Muslims? Why is it that our places of worship are constantly bulldozed on flimsy grounds?

The mosque committee produced records going back to 1911 to establish its existence. Prayers have been offered there continuously for more than a century. This is the very definition of waqf by user, which is still protected as waqf under law.

The Limitation Act does not ordinarily allow the Government an unlimited period to wake up one fine morning and assert possession over immovable property.

There was more than a century of open, continuous and public possession? The State cannot pretend that this possession began yesterday, hence the principle of adverse possession would apply even if we concede to the state’s arguments.
The mosque came first, the collectorate later.

For some people, perhaps the very sight of a masjid causes pain. That is their problem, not ours. Look away if you must. You cannot bulldoze our masjid just because you have an itch.
