Nearly every phone and computer on Earth relies on one plain-text file to know what time it is.
When a country changes its clocks with a few weeks’ notice, or Morocco pauses daylight saving for Ramadan, someone has to update that file. Since 02005, that someone has been Paul Eggert, a computer science professor at UCLA, who does it as a volunteer.

Happy to announce the launch of the new 100 Year website we built for the person who coined the term "personal computer' and co-created the first online community: @stewartbrand. It includes his entire ~50,000 photo archive that is now in the Public Domain https://t.co/QowwH3MDci
In the driest US state, among the longest-lived trees on Earth, Long Now Research Fellow Anne Heggli and her team have collected over 120 million data points. This high-resolution data from Long Now's Nevada Bristlecone Preserve is unlocking the secrets of Earth's oldest trees.
Tuesday's Long Now Talk "Art and Science at the Bristlecone Preserve" brought together @DRIscience's Anne Heggli, artist and philosopher @jonathonkeats, and paleoclimatologist Adam Csank to illustrate how "long science" is the key to understanding ecosystem resilience and deep time.
Such a wonderful night with rich conversations. Thank you to all who attended.

Interesting alternative temporal approach to thinking about deep time that centers human-scale experiences of time across epochs: 1 trillion person-years.

First time at Red Rocks Amphitheater recently and learned that it is yet another spectacular public works project initiated under FDR’s New Deal program and the Civilian Conservation Corps. The long tail of that 10 years of federal agency-driven construction is hard to fathom: Timberline Lodge (absolutely glorious), Bay Bridge, Hoover and Grand Coulee Dam, LaGuardia Airport, Lincoln Tunnel, the San Antonio River Walk, Griffith Observatory in LA, and thousands of schools, libraries, hospitals, sidewalks and more. We could also use our public purse to build generously for future generations. These are choices we can still make.
🌐 It's our annual event! Celebrate the Wayback Machine & the many other Internet Archive tools that help people preserve, explore, share & build knowledge together!
From saving materials to exploring government records, researching history & building new tools with collections & APIs, these tools turn a shared library into a place where everyone can participate.

Do you know someone incredible that can help us build @longnow Labs? We are looking for a part-time contractor to work directly with me on our first Lab: Protocols of the Long Now, which was launched earlier this year in collaboration with the Protocol Institute's @tmbr_ss + @vgr.
We have an exciting 2 years ahead and are looking for someone to support the operations and editorial aspects of the program. Please help spread the word!

Laurie Anderson — writer, director, artist, musician — has been selected as the Future Library’s next contributor.
Creator of Future Library, artist and Long Now Council member Katie Paterson, told The Guardian, “Laurie Anderson has spent a lifetime sending signals into the unknown. For decades, she has explored how we tell stories, how we remember, and how we imagine what is yet to come. Moving freely between language, music, visual art, technology and performance, her work travels between the intimate and the planetary, love and loss, politics and poetry, with humour, tenderness and wonder.”
