Last night, as part of the @eansonline@MedUni_Wien Epilepsy Surgery Brain Dissection Course, we had a special visit to the Narrenturm, one of the largest collections of anatomical and pathological specimens in the world. It is housed in one of the oldest hospitals for mental health patients built anywhere. Each of the specimens tells a story of a person, with a disease or disorder, and some of them speak of incredible suffering. We may find ourselves judging those who came before us in #medicine harshly for the treatments they employed and the understanding they had of disease, and of patients and their rights, and we may consider ourselves more enlightened, but as we learn how to treat our patients with #epilepsy better, I can’t help but wonder, how will we be judged by future generations? #epilepsysurgery #neurosurgery #surgery #anatomy #pathology #narrenturm #wien #vienna
