The @ symbol on your keyboard, which powers every email address on Earth, was invented by Catholic monks🇻🇦

In the Middle Ages, before the printing press existed, every book in Europe had to be copied out by hand. The men who did the copying were almost entirely monks, working in the scriptoriums of Catholic monasteries. They spent their days bent over parchment, writing one word at a time by candlelight.

To save time and precious parchment, the monks invented hundreds of abbreviations and shorthand symbols. One of them was the @. They created it as a shorthand for the Latin word "ad," meaning "toward" or "at," by drawing the letter "a" and curving the tail of the letter "d" around it.

The symbol survived for centuries in religious manuscripts. The earliest known use of the @ in history is found in a Christian manuscript from 1345 held today in the Vatican Apostolic Library, where it appears as the first letter of the word "Amen."

From there it spread to merchant ledgers across Europe, then to typewriters, and in 1971 it was chosen by the engineer Ray Tomlinson to separate a username from a domain in the world's first email.

Lamento confirmar el hallazgo sin vida de Memo y Zafar, esposos estadounidenses desaparecidos en #CDMX hace casi un mes.

Viajaron de Chicago a México buscando oportunidades y su sueño se apagó luego de que fueran secuestrados por una banda dedicada al robo, extorsión y asesinatos.

Una más de negligencias y omisiones por parte de @PDI_FGJCDMX de la @FiscaliaCDMX.

El grupo encargado de la búsqueda NO QUISO IR a la zona boscosa donde fueron encontrados muertos.
Los allegados ya les habían pasado la ubicación, pero les dijeron que tenían que colaborar con autoridades mexiquenses para el rescate. Dejaron pasar 5 días y los hallaron en una cabaña donde los tuvieron retenidos con vida por casi tres semanas.

Hay historias que duelen profundamente y que nos obligan a preguntarnos qué está pasando como sociedad.
Tras días de búsqueda, integrantes de un colectivo ciudadano localizaron el cu3rpo de una mujer dentro de una columna de concreto de un puente vehicular en Tijuana, Baja California. El hallazgo ocurrió en el viaducto elevado de la avenida Internacional, donde los buscadores llegaron siguiendo indicios sobre una persona d3saparecida.
Lo que encontraron fue estremecedor. Para recuperar los r3stos fue necesario utilizar maquinaria pesada, herramientas de demolición y trabajar durante varias horas para abrir un acceso dentro de la estructura. De acuerdo con los primeros reportes, la víctima habría permanecido en el lugar alrededor de una semana.
Familiares y miembros del colectivo señalaron que podría tratarse de María Carolina Paniagua, de 41 años. Sin embargo, serán las pruebas periciales y de ADN las que determinen oficialmente su identidad y las circunstancias de su fallecimiento.
Más allá de las investigaciones, este caso vuelve a reflejar una dolorosa realidad: en México, cientos de familias continúan buscando a sus seres queridos con sus propios recursos, recorriendo calles, cerros, canales y ahora hasta estructuras de concreto, haciendo un trabajo que jamás deberían tener que realizar por sí solas.
Hoy una familia enfrenta una noticia devastadora. Hoy un colectivo vuelve a demostrar que la esperanza no se rinde. Pero también queda una pregunta que sigue resonando en cada caso similar: ¿cuántas historias más tendrán que terminar así para que las d3sapariciones dejen de ser una herida abierta en nuestro país? 🕊️

🥺Guillermo y Zafar vinieron a México a cuidar a la madre de Zafar; lamentablemente, la inseguridad no les permitió hacerlo.
Guillermo Jaffet Hidalgo Ortiz era ciudadano estadounidense de origen mexicano. Zafar Padamsee Mawani, su pareja, también era ciudadano estadounidense.
Ambos habían llegado desde Chicago para atender asuntos familiares y apoyar a la mamá de Zafar, quien necesitaba cuidados, ya que padece alzhéimer.
Entre esos planes estaba adaptar la casa para ella. Por eso, según los reportes, contactaron a unas personas que supuestamente les venderían e instalarían un elevador o silla elevadora para facilitar la movilidad en el hogar.
El 20 de mayo de 2026, la pareja salió para reunirse con esas personas. Se ha reportado que compartieron su ubicación como medida de precaución, pero poco después sus celulares fueron apagados y ya no se volvió a saber de ellos.
Desde entonces comenzó la angustia de sus familiares y amigos.
Días después, también se reportaron movimientos sospechosos en una cuenta bancaria de uno de ellos, lo que aumentó el temor de que hubieran sido víctimas de un delito.
Lo último que se sabe es devastador: durante un operativo en la zona de La Marquesa, en Ocoyoacac, Estado de México, autoridades localizaron cuerpos en una fosa clandestina, entre ellos los de Guillermo y Zafar.
Una pareja que vino a México para cuidar a un ser querido terminó en una historia que nadie debería vivir.
😕México no puede normalizar que una cita para instalar un elevador termine en una desaparición con un doloroso final.
Guillermo y Zafar tenían vida, familia, planes y una razón profundamente humana para estar aquí. Hoy su caso exige verdad, justicia y respuestas.
Nadie debería venir a cuidar a su madre y terminar siendo encontrado en una fosa clandestina.

Then they found the grocery stores.

Five of them within one mile.
Each one the size of an aircraft hangar.
Burgers. Steaks. Brisket. Ribs. Pulled pork. Lamb. Veal. Every cut of every animal ever domesticated by human civilization available in one refrigerated aisle at ten in the morning on a Tuesday.

The Germans stood in the meat section for forty five minutes.
In silence.
Processing.

They finally understand why we do not have trains.

We have roads wide enough for the cars we actually drive.
Parking lots the size of small European countries.
Airports in every city worth visiting.

Why would we need trains.

THEY KILLED HIM FOR DEFENDING ABUSE VICTIMS💔💔💔

On the evening of June 10, 2018, 43-year-old Fr. Nilo was preparing to celebrate Sunday Mass at Nuestra Señora de las Nieves Chapel in the Philippines.

As he reverently put on his alb (priestly vestment), a gunman approached the chapel window and fired multiple shots through the glass and blinds. Fr. Nilo was struck several times, including a fatal head wound, and died instantly in front of around 70 shocked parishioners.

He was killed not for any wrongdoing — but for boldly defending the vulnerable. A dedicated priest and defender of Catholic doctrines, Fr. Nilo had become a strong advocate for victims of molestation and child abuse.

He helped revive rape cases against a former sacristan/seminarian, standing firmly for justice and the Church’s teachings. Investigations revealed the mastermind was the uncle of the accused, who hired a gunman for the equivalent of about $2,000.

In an age when many remain silent, Fr. Nilo fearlessly spoke the truth and protected the innocent — even at the ultimate cost. The Catholic faithful worldwide recognize his death as a powerful act of martyrdom: a shepherd who laid down his life for his flock and for the defense of the Faith.

His story echoes the martyrs of every era — from the early Church to today — reminding us that true sanctity often shines brightest in the face of persecution.
