@CH_Nate#ch1003#divc0m Maybe Dante was trying to show a more chill reality for non-Christians. Also, since atheist didn't believe I don't think they would have really cared where they'd end up if there even was a hell.
@CHkeaniv#ch1003#divc0m I agree because it also acknowledges the validity of other cultures and taught people at the time about the way the other half lives or believes.
#divc0m#ch1003 I remember in middle school, my history teacher would always talk about this book and I was interested but it seems so creepy now im not so sure.
#divc0m#ch1003 Dante's vision of hell is terrifying, a place that no one would ever think of entering. So was it a scare tactic for people to be righteous or no?
@CHDavidH#ch1003#mrcopolo That concept is hilarious because we know they knew other religions existed, so they just kind of ignored the facts and made their own idea of how the world worked.
@riley_twitchell#ch1003#mrcopolo Unlike the other travelers, he went in with an open mind with the intention of learning about other people instead of being objective.
#mrcopolo#ch1003 There are so many travel narratives and so many inaccurate descriptions of people. Why did people travel around if they were just gonna talk mess and not accept other cultures?
#ch1003#mrcopolo Comparing this to Mandeville's travels I would like to think that this work is considered blasphemy for the Christian community at the time. I'm sure they would find it hard to believe that the Pagans of the east are normal people and are civilized, not monsters
@IwategaUnr #ch1003#mand3v1ll3 based off the steps the other ant said and was confused because he walked passed the food and kept going but his steps were longer because of the stilts so he was lost
@IwategaUnr #ch1003#mand3v1ll3 I don't get the use of paces. People have different leg lengths so it'd be different for each person. Reminds me of an article i read on ants and how they communicate to say where food is so they put stilts on it and the ant walked where he was supposed to go
#ch1003#mand3v1ll3 When he talks about the Greek alphabet and says the "A, B C, E of Greece" I internally cringed because what is this order he is speaking of, help.
#ch1003#mand3v1ll3 In the first few chapters of the book, Sir Mandeville doesn't really seem to be saying anything about the people or places he visits. More like stuff he's seen and talking about kinda relevant Jesus stuff. It's like he doesn't care about the culture.
@IwategaUnr @Fariha_Raisa_#ch1003#islmtrvl I think today's idea is every man for himself which sucks because sometimes you need help and you feel like society will look down on you if you ask.
