An estimated 120,000 people turned out for the #KabakaBirthdayRun2025 organised by the central Uganda kingdom of Buganda to celebrate its monarch Ronald Mutebi's 70th birthday. Now only a “cultural kingdom”, Buganda Kingdom was one of the most advanced and centralised precolonial states in Africa.
Among other things, it had a bureaucratic hierarchy, with officials appointed based on merit and loyalty — a rarity among many precolonial African states at the time.
The kingdom managed a standing army and a naval fleet of large canoes on Lake Nalubaale/Nyanza (aka Victoria) and held regattas.
Distinguishing it from many African kingdoms of the time, Buganda had codified laws, elaborate administrative divisions, and a complex tax and tribute system to fund the kingdom and the army. The capital, Mengo, was an urban political and cultural centre with planned layouts, royal enclosures, and roads connecting the kingdom.
After contact with Arabs and Europeans, the Baganda were early adopters of literacy, especially in Luganda using the Roman alphabet — they produced early newspapers and books in the 19th century.
Small wonder, then, that beneath the surface, the forces seeking a revival of this past glory are bubbling – and will continue to do so for decades to come, sharpened by both real and perceived Buganda marginalisation by modern-day central Uganda governments. The Uganda that emerges after the unprecedented so-far four-decades long rule of President (Gen.) Yoweri Museveni, will be defined by the settlement of what has become known as this the "Buganda Question".
