When you have a difficult, disrespectful, and defiant student, my biggest tip for you… is to have lots of conversations with them when they are not in trouble. These conversations are where you build rapport… and that rapport makes future confrontations less likely.
The purpose of pedagogy is to elevate student VOICE while cultivating critical consciousness and confidence. It should NOT be to slow drip endless facts, condition students to compliance, diminish their ways of being & learning, &/or engage in spirit murdering (@BLoveSoulPower).
Hey! Look! Did you see that massively huge convoy of health workers who has gone in to work each & every day to provide healthcare for vulnerable people amidst staffing shortages, snowstorms & a raging pandemic? Yeah...shoutout to that convoy. That convoy is the best. 🙌🏾
Sometimes, when we are overly critical of others it’s because deep down, we are feeling overly critical toward ourselves. Self-compassion goes a long way.
