VP SHETTIMA LEADS GOVERNORS TO BENIN REPUBLIC; SEEKS NEW INVESTMENT PATH FOR NIGERIA'S TEXTILE INDUSTRY

Vice President Kashim Shettima is leading a high-level working visit to the Republic of Benin, with some state governors and senior officials.

The delegation will visit the Glo-Djigbé Industrial Zone, near Cotonou, where it will engage representatives of the Beninese government, investors and private-sector operators involved in the development and management of the industrial hub.

The visit is aimed at strengthening the implementation of Nigeria’s Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones Programme and drawing practical lessons from Benin’s approach to agricultural value addition, industrial infrastructure, investment mobilisation, skills development and export-oriented production.

Particular attention will be given to the GDIZ textile park, which operates an integrated production system covering cotton spinning, weaving, fabric processing and garment manufacturing.

The industrial zone covers about one thousand six hundred and forty hectares, designed to move agricultural commodities from the supply of raw materials through processing to the export of finished products.

The delegation is also expected to explore opportunities for technology and industrial training, modern machinery, reliable energy systems, common processing facilities and stronger public-private partnerships.

The welfare of our teachers remains a priority of this administration. I inaugurated a high-powered committee to thoroughly investigate concerns relating to salary payments and the implementation of the new minimum wage for primary school teachers across Kebbi State.

As a former teacher and union leader, I understand the importance of ensuring that every teacher receives his or her rightful entitlement. This committee has been mandated to establish the facts, identify any irregularities, and recommend appropriate actions where necessary.

I have confidence in the integrity and competence of the committee members and expect them to discharge this responsibility with fairness, transparency, and professionalism. Any individual found responsible for acts capable of undermining the welfare of our teachers will be held accountable.

Our administration remains committed to protecting the rights of workers, promoting accountability in public service, and ensuring that resources meant for the people are utilized for their intended purpose.

The truth must be established, justice must prevail, and the interests of our teachers must be safeguarded.

I had the honour of attending the Opening Ceremony of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Birnin Kebbi Branch (Equity Bar) Law Week 2026, held in Birnin Kebbi.

The theme of this year’s Law Week, “Justice Beyond Algorithms: Navigating Law and Artificial Intelligence in Nigeria’s Evolving Justice System,” is both timely and relevant, as technological innovation continues to shape every aspect of our society, including the administration of justice.

I commend the leadership and members of the NBA Birnin Kebbi Branch for providing this important platform for intellectual discourse on the opportunities and challenges presented by artificial intelligence within the legal profession and our justice system.

As we embrace emerging technologies, we must ensure that innovation strengthens, rather than diminishes, the fundamental principles of justice, fairness, accountability, and the rule of law. The human element of justice must always remain at the centre of our legal system.

I appreciate the insightful contributions of the distinguished speakers, judicial officers, legal practitioners, and stakeholders who participated in this important conversation. Their perspectives will undoubtedly contribute to shaping a more responsive, efficient, and equitable justice system for our nation.

I had a fruitful interaction with primary school teachers, education managers, local government chairmen and other stakeholders on issues relating to teachers’ welfare, particularly concerns arising from salary adjustments and the implementation of the new minimum wage.

As a teacher and former labour leader, I understand these concerns and I have directed the immediate constitution of a high-powered committee to thoroughly review all genuine complaints and submit its report within one month. Let me assure our teachers that no legitimate concern will be ignored.

My administration remains committed to the welfare of teachers and the development of education. We will continue to take practical steps to strengthen the sector and ensure that those entrusted with shaping the future of our children receive the attention and support they deserve.
