At the end of 2024, Malawi’s debt reached its highest level since Malawi received debt relief in 2006 under the HIPC initiative. Specifically, the stock of public and publicly‑guaranteed (PPG) debt rose sharply, from 27.7 percent of GDP in 2012 to 87 percent at the end of 2024.
According to the July 2025 joint World Bank/IMF 2025 Debt Sustainability Analysis (DSA), Malawi’s external and overall public debt remains classified as “in distress,” consistent with the assessment from the November 2023 DSA.
Despite Africa’s rapid growth in digital financial services, nearly 400 million people remain excluded from formal financial systems and over a third of banked adults opening their first accounts to receive government wages.
The human rights record of Lesotho will be examined by the United Nations Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group for the fourth time on Wednesday, 30 April 2025, in a meeting in Geneva that will be webcast live.
