A critically important article about the silencing of child sexual abuse, the haunting effects of generational trauma and the cognitive dissonance that surfaces when we are forced to confront ugly truths about our foundational relationships and its relation to our own identity.
Rachel Aviv writes about what Alice Munro’s partner’s abuse of her daughter did to her family—and her fiction, which “captures what it feels like to live next to pain and shame without ever looking directly at it.”

Personal favourite goals from Euro 2024 so far:
Füllkrug's goal in Germany v Scotland and Müldür and Güler's goals in Turkey v Georgia.
My replay button is now broken.
They can’t. Section 82 of the Penal Code states anything done by a child under ten years old is not an offence. It grants complete immunity. Juvenile Courts are for those between 10 to below 18, unless it involves a “grave crime” in which case that child may be tried as an adult.
It’s a 2am surprise: The Tortured Poets Department is a secret DOUBLE album. ✌️ I’d written so much tortured poetry in the past 2 years and wanted to share it all with you, so here’s the second installment of TTPD: The Anthology. 15 extra songs. And now the story isn’t mine anymore… it’s all yours. 🤍

Question (out of curiosity) for the Shariah lawyers out there:
Does JAKIM have jurisdiction over companies, especially if owned by non-Muslims? Also, if there is an applicable offence, is that still constitutional in light of Federal Court’s decision in Ikki Putra/Nik Elin?
From my readings, the standard of proof adopted in Shariah criminal proceedings is either Yaqin (higher) or Zan Al Ghalib (lower). For criminal cases in non-Shariah Courts, it’s beyond reasonable doubt. If offence cannot be proved to these standards the matter should be dropped.
I hope it’s borne in mind the legal test should be whether it could be the shoe logo, not whether it could be the word “Allah”.
The answer to the former should be “yes”. Same applies to any police investigations into the matter.
The Islamic Development Department (Jakim) will determine whether a logo, which appears on the sole of several of Vern's footwear models, is Arabic writing for the word "Allah" or just a graphic design of a shoe.
This is according to Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain, who told a press conference this morning that police are liaising with Jakim in its investigation into the latest religious controversy.

TW: Murder, Rape
Discussions surrounding this news story have raised important questions regarding the nature & limits of the right to self-defence. What are we permitted in law to defend? Does this right extend to causing death? Who needs to prove what when this is claimed?
👇
* The assailant need not have completed the commission of the offence. An attempt or threat to commit the offence is sufficient to trigger the right to bodily self-defence (subject to the restrictions above) (section 102).
