Our #NichollsFish Conservation students explored @TulaneFish’s collection of over 7 MILLION fishes; including big sturgeon/gars, and the world’s only American Pocket Shark specimen🦈
Students also learned the value of museum collections for biodiversity/conservation research👍
"One of the most anti-conservation and illogical tendencies of the fishing community is its treatment of "trash fish (basically, any fish outside a small list of preferred "game" species)".
- Fishing through the apocalypse @eatguineapigs. I think this is well said!
Thoughts?🤔
Update 😁: These are the quadrant streak plates I made with the water sample from the bayou!!! I see two separate morphologies on my plate! I wander what bacteria we got lurking around in the bayou! 🤷🏼♀️ (Identification coming soon to Twitter post near you.) #prayingforphage
1) I started my research today! I scraped slime off of a gar, which was an interesting task!
2)I CANNOT GET RID OF THE SMELL. SOS.
3)So, my professor can READILY identify a species of gar from a stamp on a shirt, which I thought was a true talent, can yours? No? I thought so.
@RunicNature@OpalCompass That's the best part of @NichollsState. When youre closest to the coast, you can stamp just about any fish you want on a shirt! All you need you is some fish and acrylic paint....and some laundry detergent 🤮!! Its definitely a fashion statement!
@chris_chiarelli@SolomonRDavid As amazing as the sweet smell of warm garfish is, my classmates beg to differ. After soap, germ-x, ethanol, iodine, more soap, hot water, and scrub, the smell remains! Some one told me to use tomato sauce and I have my reservations for sure!
🐠 Fish:
- Spectacular
- Breathe water or air
- Awe-inspiring diversity (more species than all other vertebrates combined)
🐔 Birds:
- Constantly pooping on our stuff
- Will borrow homologous structures and never provide credit
- Canada Goose

The little seaphages class at @NichollsBiology is a hit!! All of these students are so great. Honestly, it couldnt have been done without the BEST TA'S...and a pretty great PI!😂
-More progress to come!
It’s been such a long week!!! Totally proud of my researchers in #SeaPhages! Three new protocols covered this week, and a lotta phage isolated!! @NichollsState@NichollsBiology
The restoration plantings at Elmers Island are really taking off. Notice how the plants trap wind-blown sand and build dunes. That is why it is important to plant newly restored coastal habitat!
@GlobalAffairs4U I 100% agree with you! Due to the fact that the piranha's typical diet includes fish, crustaceans, etc. l think its VERY BOLD to skip to the conclusion that their diet is primarily SMALL CHILDREN. (Also, I do understand that these signs are jokes. I just think it's humorous.)
