In a movie, the audience notices action first. Movement captures our eye, and then we process the meaning of that action.

We want to duplicate that in our screenwriting.

That means:

1. Describe the action. THEN.
2. The meaning of the action.

𝗦𝗼, 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀:

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘩𝘪𝘮, 𝘛𝘺 𝘨𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵.

𝗧𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀:

𝘛𝘺 𝘨𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵 - 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘪𝘮.

This small little thing helps with the feeling of watching a movie on screen rather than reading a narrative.

It's fair to ask what kind of difference could this possibly make. And it's true, one small thing makes very little difference.

But the small things add up over 100 pages, and it helps keep a reader immersed in the emotional experience.

Can all these small things save a bad story?

Nope. Not even close.

The goal is to always make a great story more easy to recognize.
