To 'emasculate' means to diminish masculinity/masculine traits in someone identifying as male.

But it seems there is no word that means 'to diminish femininity/feminine traits in someone identifying as female.

Is there one?

Somewhat related: ever since having children, I've been so struck by the difference in the connotation of "to father a child" (which basically means to impregnate a woman, nothing more) versus "to mother a child" (which basically means to care for a child.)

Our time is not unique in twisting the "accessibility" of art into a term of abuse, simply because some marketers who call themselves artists abuse it. But between the art that is willfully obscure (which comes from fear of being seen) and the art that is superficially simplistic (which comes from fear of not being seen), there is the art that tries, through a practice of craft so masterful that the craft becomes invisible, to communicate the infinite and common mystery of being alive. It is a mystery beyond articulation, beyond reduction, and yet accessible to all who open themselves wholly to such an art, an art which in its varied forms and styles says to us, "I know your wound. But you are not your wound. Let us understand one another."

Reflecting on art, Tolstoy once wrote, "I know people who consider themselves most refined, and who say that they do not understand the poetry of love for one’s neighbour, of self-sacrifice," or, by extension, any of the common virtues that move us beyond the worship of our own afflictions, our divisions, and a subjectivity that forgets that we go into ourselves to find each other. "If art is an important matter," Tolstoy continued, "a spiritual blessing, essential for all...then it should be accessible to everyone. And if, as in our day, it is not accessible to all, then one of two things: either art is not the vital matter it is represented to be, or that art which we call art is not the real thing.”

"Only mystery allows us to live," García-Lorca once said, "only mystery." And only the wish to be open, truly open, while oceans of ink are spilled to justify and make beautiful the fear that makes us closed.
