- Once they got here, tribes conquered, displaced, and built empires over each other (Comanches pushed out the Apache and built the Comancheria — sound familiar?).
- Every single piece of land on earth has changed hands through conquest. That’s how human history works.

I messaged the owner and complained and this was his response:

We declined to serve the National Guard in uniform, and I stand behind it completely.

I love this country and this city, and that's exactly why I did it. I have respect for the people who serve, and the important work they do in national defense and disaster response. But that work is not policing an American city. Soldiers are trained for combat, not for policing our neighbors, and using the military to police American citizens is a threat to democracy, not a protection of it. It puts everyone in danger, including the troops themselves, who were sent here to do a job they were never trained for.

This deployment has not made Memphis safer. This month it left a 20-year-old Memphian, Tyrin Johnson, dead during a foot chase, with no body camera footage and no answers for his family. Crime here was already at a 25-year low before these troops ever arrived, according to the Memphis Police Department's own data, confirmed by an independent state audit. Real safety came from this community, not from soldiers on the corner.

Turning away the deployment is a protest against that, and not against anyone as a person. I'm sorry those young men didn't get their dinner, but they'll be fine. What I won't do is treat soldiers policing our city as normal, because I care too much about this country to pretend it is.
