Commerford Zoo’s last surviving Elephant, Minnie, remains alone and in a small, concrete enclosure in Connecticut that cannot meet her physical or psychological needs. Her companions, Elephants Beulah and Karen, died several years ago after decades being used for circus performances, photo opportunities, and rides.

Beulah and Karen never experienced freedom, but it does not have to be too late for Minnie to go to one of the US Elephant sanctuaries where she could have companionship, space, and a sense of freedom.

We're hearing this sad news more often as housing development are building closer to wildlife habitat. The animals lose their homes and go to nearby human areas for food. It was bad enough when individual bears were involved. But now families are killed as mothers and their babies die together.

Why not make humans pay a bigger price for their role in the killing. Instead if just issuing warnings people don't pay attention to, authorities should demand bear-proof trash bins for the whole town and levy a big fine and required jail time for not adhering to the rules.

In Buncombe County, North Carolina, six black bears were euthanized after entering homes looking for food among trash and leftovers left by humans.

The most heartbreaking part was that a mother bear died alongside two of her cubs, because authorities said they had already "learned" that behavior.

They didn't die for being cruel. They didn't die for attacking. They died because they were hungry and found food where people hadn't secured it.

And that's why so many perlople are asking the same thing: was there really no other solution before taking their lives?

Dr Patch has worked at the Royal Free for over THIRTY years. Dr Crowe had worked there for FIFTEEN years.
