We found that >50% of children <2yo adm to ANZ PICUs and requiring enteral nutrition received expressed breast milk. Valuable pilot data for future studies! #PICUNutrition#PedsICU@ICUNutrition@JemmaWoodgate@Katie_OBee https://t.co/8CLCSw9JZ0
Excited to share our latest paper “Describing Energy Expenditure in Children with a Chronic Disease: A Systematic Review” in Advances in Nutrition #AdvNutr@jnutritionorg

A fantastic team effort, which included our wonderful Masters and BNutSci (NUT3001) students! @davidson_zoe, @Katie_OBee, @EvelynVolders, @tashbillich, @Kay_Nguo (plus others not on X!)
This review describes the available literature of resting (REE) and total #energy expenditure (TEE) in children with chronic disease, measured by gold-standard methods of #IndirectCalorimetry and doubly-labelled water #DLW.
271 studies across 24 chronic conditions were identified. Over 60% of studies were published >10 y ago and conducted on relatively small populations with the majority of studies measuring REE.
We reveal key future research opportunities - international collaboration and robust measurement of energy expenditure should be conducted to generate meaningful predictive energy equations to provide updated evidence reflective of emerging disease-modifying therapies.
What a beautiful location to present the results of our systematic review describing the impact of disease modifying therapies on nutrition outcomes in spinal muscular atrophy!
