Today marks the 80th anniversary of the Kielce Pogrom, which took place on July 4, 1946.

The largest anti-Jewish pogroms in postwar Europe occurred only in Poland. They were classic "pogroms" - the very russian word pogrom entered virtually every language because of such events.

From the August 1945 Kraków pogrom to the bloodiest one in Kielce, the script was always the same: "The Jews killed a Christian boy for ritual purposes."

The Polish Catholic Church, with the antisemitism that characterized parts of it at the time, played a particularly sinister role in creating the atmosphere that made this horrific pogrom possible.

The Kielce pogrom was especially horrific because a small group of Jews who had survived the Holocaust had settled in a single building. They were trapped inside and systematically murdered over the course of several hours.

The perpetrators were not only ordinary residents of the city. Polish soldiers and Polish police also participated in the killings.

The Polish Catholic Church, represented by the local bishop, Czesław Kaczmarek, took the extraordinary step of passively supporting the violence and never condemned it.

Just imagine: the Catholic Church found itself in complete alignment with the Stalinist government of Bolesław Bierut in its hostility toward Jews, under the slogan of "finishing Hitler's work." The tragedy unfolded with the full support of the state.

This wave of pogroms triggered the mass emigration of Holocaust survivors from Poland within just a few months.

Today, on the 80th anniversary of the tragedy, the former head of Poland's Institute of National Remembrance, Karol Nawrocki, should be in Kielce. He should bring with him the Primate of Poland, Archbishop Wojciech Polak, so that he might kneel before that building in prayer and have the courage to honor the memory of the Jews murdered in the postwar pogroms.

At the very least, this is what his political patron, Jarosław Kaczyński, and his predecessor, Andrzej Duda, have done in the past.

Especially today, on the 80th anniversary of this tragedy.

Вітаю шановних поляків, з 80 річним ювілеєм погрому у Кельцях.

Крайнього в Європі єврейського погрому, здійсненого озвірілими польськими жителями цього містечка, коли поляки звіряче убивали своїх сусідів-євреїв, які дивом вижили під час Голокосту.

В тих маленьких трунах – розтерзані поляками немовлята.

Погром під гаслом «Завершимо роботу Гітлера!», розпочався 4 липня 1946 о 10 ранку. Опівдні в будівлю, де переховувалисчя євреї прибула група поляків на чолі з сержантом міліції Владиславом Блахутом, яка роззброїла присутніх євреїв, що чинили опір.

Коли євреї відмовилися вийти на вулицю де на них чекали озвірілі поляки, Блахут став бити їх рукояткою револьвера по головах, кричачи: «Німці не встигли знищити вас, але ми закінчимо їх роботу».

Натовп поляків увірвався в будинок. Євреїв, чоловіків і жінок, старих і дітей, викидали з вікон і на вулиці били залізними прутами, дрючками, молотками. До кінця дня було вбито 42 людини, а також понад 50 чоловік поранено.

В кожного народу є свої скелети в шафі... І діставати їх звідти не потрібно, але потрібно пам'ятати, що вони є, перш ніж іншим дорікати і диктувати яка історія повинна бути в інших державах.
