In tournament football, that profile can take you very far because physical dominance can make the difference in tight knockout games.

The reason England will probably not win the World Cup is the exact opposite. Tuchel has left behind some of the most unique creative profiles available to him (Palmer, Trent, and Wharton). Players who see passes others don’t, players who can slow the game down, manipulate space, and unlock stubborn defensive blocks.

That may not matter against teams that want to play football. But when England eventually face a side sitting in a compact low block in a quarter-final or semi-final, they may run into a problem. Not every game can be won with intensity, running power, and athleticism. Today showed that.
