President William Ruto has realised he can't win in a free and fair election. Weak governments fear clean elections.

Constitutional change is supposed to be rare, sober, and backed by overwhelming national consensus.

When it’s driven from the top down, packaged with propaganda, and sold as a magic fix for economic and political failure, it becomes a power project, not a people’s project. You don’t reach for the supreme law of the land just because your politics isn’t working you reach for it when the nation agrees something fundamental must change.

Kenyans should judge this push on one question only: does it strengthen citizens against the state, or the state against citizens? If it’s the latter, then all the sweet talk is noise. A leader confident in performance doesn’t need to re-write the rules.
