The Rashaun Jones case is maxing out my "something's not right" meter.

If you’re into cases with messy investigations, questionable witnesses, questionable judges, and potential detective misconduct, here’s what stands out to me in the Rashaun Jones/Bryan Pata case:

- 15-year cold case with no new forensic evidence — the arrest only happened after pressure from the family and media.

- Lead detective who took over in 2021 (and claims the previous lead didn't pass along his case file) is now under an internal affairs investigation for allegedly posting biased comments about the defendant’s guilt, witness credibility, and more during the trial, while under sequestration.

- Former prosecutor Michael Von Zamft (who signed off on Jones’ arrest) was later hit with a Florida Bar complaint for serious misconduct in another murder case, including witness manipulation and undisclosed benefits to witnesses.

- Jailhouse informant who was removed from the witness list after threatening to “blow up” the prosecution's case… then mysteriously added back after the mistrial.

- Defense tried to introduce evidence of alternative suspects (there are several), including a hired Haitian hitman who allegedly confessed, but none of it was allowed. The State argued at trial one there were no other viable witnesses.

- Eyewitness identification with major problems (Didn't actually witness the shooting; first ID was done in June 2007 when the incident occurred in November 2006; bad lighting, no glasses, diabetic; low-quality lineup; second ID used the exact same array WITH the witnesses notes from the first ID still present; Lead detective testified at trial that he knew the witness was 100% sure; eyewitness was a professor at the university who followed UM football and would look the players up on ESPN)

- Multiple abandoned leads (including the victim’s girlfriend’s twin brother with a violent gun-related record), some of whom were said to be excluded when they really weren't.

- Victim was extremely paranoid in his final weeks (multiple loaded guns, sleeping in his closet, telling family people were chasing him in his dreams)

- Shortly before Bryan Pata was killed, he was at Club Life with Willie Williams and others when a suspected gang fight broke out (Will's cousin may have gotten cut up real badly - Jones mentions it briefly in an interrogation). Williams said that, in the following days, he got a phone call from someone telling him there was a hit on out Will and Bryan. Williams didn't testify at trial, and I don't believe this information came in.

As I predicted, Karmelo Anthony was found guilty of murder. From the facts presented, this always appeared to be a straightforward case. It’s unfortunate that the discussion became centered on race when the core issue was that a person was killed without legal justification.

The level of hatred in the words of former MSP troopers Michael Proctor and Sean Goode is so terrifying and repugnant that it’s hard to believe it’s true.

But it is.

These are men who once wielded the incredible power to destroy people’s lives in the blink of an eye.

Think about that for a moment.

Their hatred is boundless—women, people of color, believers of different faiths than theirs and the list goes on. They are equal opportunity haters. If you’re different, they hate you.

This level of hatred cannot be separated from what they did for a living. It’s who they are.

I believe with all my heart that this is an institutional problem within MSP and CPD. Every case these two men touched that resulted in a conviction needs to be thoroughly reviewed.

These men were sworn to protect and serve. Instead, they terrorized and harassed. If you think they are the only ones, you’d be wrong.

This is both a terrible and great day, as this level of transparency and exposure is required to effect change.

The good people who risk their lives every day doing the job the right way deserve far better, because this kind of stink permeates entire departments.

Shame on both MSP and CPD for continuing to allow men like this to terrorize the very citizens they were sworn to protect and serve.
