🇹🇹🤝🇨🇳: China- Trinidad&Tobago Collaborations

#Trinidad and #Tobago is a small twin-island nation in the #Caribbean, known for its soca, steelpan and, of course, its energy-rich economy. Its population is 1.368 million.

Over 8,900 miles away, 1.409 billion people call #China their home, a global powerhouse in manufacturing, technology, and innovation.

These two countries are quite the opposite in size and resources. But for five decades, #TrinidadandTobago and China have maintained a robust and mutually beneficial partnership since establishing diplomatic relations on June 20 1974. This includes developing strong ties in trade, infrastructure, political dialogue, culture and education, to name a few.

TRADE

🔸China is a major trading partner of Trinidad and Tobago. Trade between Trinidad and Tobago and China has increased in recent years, resulting in over US$1.34B as of 2023.

INFRASTRUCTURE

🔸Trinidad and Tobago was the first English-speaking Caribbean nation to join China’s Belt and Road Initiative in 2018, resulting in the creation of the Phoenix Park Industrial Estate in Point Lisas. The Light Industrial Park was built by Beijing Construction Engineering Group (BCEG) in cooperation with T&T’s eTeCK and officially launched in January 2024. This is an example of the tangible impact of this bilateral relationship on national development.

🔸The China Railway Construction Cooperation is also responsible for several major construction projects, including the Central Block of the Port of Spain General Hospital in Port-of-Spain, the ANR Robinson International Airport Terminal in Crown Point, Tobago, and the Curepe Interchange.

Under the China-Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) framework, there have been declarations and joint action plans to deepen cooperation in trade, infrastructure, and people-to-people exchanges, among others.

All in all, Trinidad and Tobago's and China’s relationship is like a cross-continental friendship, with different rhythms but a growing beat, sharing goals to create a better future.

Jan 1: T&T recorded its first murder for 2025 one hour into the new year, even as a State of Emergency (SoE) was in full effect. Keegan Barbour, 39, of Pepper Hill, Laventille Road, San Juan was shot dead around 1 a.m.

January 2025: Week One in review

Jan 7: Mixed reviews from public over Pennelope Beckles’ rejection for prime ministership. Many people preferred Beckles, describing Young as inexperienced and unrelatable. PNM denied friction within party. Young says he will unite all citizens.

While the majority of the PNM parliamentary caucus has favoured Stuart Young to be Dr Keith Rowley's successor as prime minister, people from across various constituencies are throwing their support behind Pennelope Beckles. Beckles, who in 2014 lost the PNM leadership battle to Dr Rowley, suffered another defeat on Monday when the PNM parliamentary caucus voted 9-11. But as we hear in this report by Kay-Marie Fletcher, PNM supporters have mixed views over that decision.
