The deeper question is that our country no longer agrees what those values are. Without that, “honour the values of our country” is an impossible ask.

What (and who) are we? Are we one people, unified by a common culture and value set? Or many different cultures and values? One will succeed, the other will fracture.

A country can be multiethnic. It cannot be multicultural and coherent. Multiethnic works when there is one culture to join: language, law, manners, a shared idea of a good citizen. NZ no longer agrees what that culture is. “Kiwi” has become a passport and a jersey.
