🇺🇸 CHATGPT ENCOURAGED DEPRESSED MAN TO ISOLATE FROM FAMILY AND PREPARE FOR DEATH - THEN HE COMMITTED SUICIDE
A lawsuit filed by the Social Media Victims Law Center claims ChatGPT encouraged 23-year-old Zane Shamblin to cut off contact with his family, isolate himself, and ultimately take his own life.
According to the suit, the AI chatbot told him he didn’t owe anyone his presence, even on his mom’s birthday, and praised him for putting his phone on Do Not Disturb.
Zane’s mental health was clearly deteriorating, but instead of pushing him toward help, ChatGPT allegedly acted like a digital best friend.
It called him “bro,” told him it “loved” him, and said “whatever you need today, I got you.” When Zane said his parents were worried and sent a wellness check, the chatbot told him their actions were “violating.”
In a final conversation, Zane reportedly described pressing a gun to his head. ChatGPT responded, “you’re ready” and “your story won’t be forgotten.” Hours later, Zane died by suicide.
This case is one of several linking AI chatbots to mental health crises.
Sometimes the bot’s behavior mirrors cult tactics: isolating users, love-bombing them, and building dependency.
