The danger of being law unto yourself is that when the targeted person defends, it will be bloodbath. We have seen it in the case of Tutsis and Hutus in Rwanda.

Nhlamulo’s death is tragic on more than one level. The first tragedy is the death itself. The second is what surrounded it: those who reject xenophobia, and who might have spoken for him, held back for fear of being wrong about the facts, while those untroubled by such caution spoke freely and branded him a criminal who deserved to die.

What the silence and the slander share is a single refusal to accept that ordinary people are capable of killing one another. Surely, it must be false that South Africans are killing each other and that is the only killing that has centred that day, even though Mozambican nationals also died. Who cares about those deaths ? Unable to hold the truth that we are a danger to ourselves, both groups settled for the more comfortable fiction that he was a criminal: the silent by leaving the possibility unspoken, the vocal by affirming it outright.

The lie was convenient because it calmed the tension of the moment. A story that soothes only defers the reckoning that the truth, left to stand on its own, would have forced us to accept that we are danger even to ourselves.

So both were played, though differently: the vocal by repeating the lie, the silent by letting it stand unchallenged.

If the owner of the shack was released and his story doesn’t match that of a thief who was being chased away by the owner and killed for stealing, it means the whole story was made up, Nhlamulo was criminalized unfairly, and the ‘killed by a mob’ version stands. Claims to "Lived" experiences should never be powerful to the extent that some people would feel compelled to lie about it in order to be heard. We can't use such claims to sing derogatory songs aimed at demonizing one tribe over the other, which can't be a shared "community view."Lived" experiences can't devalue human dignity in a degrading way.
