Welcome to Blighty: Where the Actors are in Parliament and the News is Fiction
For decades now, Britain has been trapped in a peculiar theatre production. The cast? A two-part ensemble of overpaid actors and propagandists. The stage? Westminster and Broadcasting House. The price of admission? Your taxes, your patience, and your dignity.
First up: The BBC—a proud relic of a time when televisions had knobs and journalism had standards. Funded by the sacred TV licence, this bastion of neutrality 😉 has dedicated itself to one noble mission: convincing Britons they should be deeply ashamed of their history. Did we abolish the slave trade at great national cost? Nope—just focus on the fact we were involved in it. Celebrate Newton, Churchill, or Shakespeare? Only if they're reimagined as problematic, colonial, or cancelled. The BBC’s golden rule: if it’s bad, blame the British; if it’s good, credit literally anyone else, preferably while hosting a panel show about it with canned laughter.

But the real performance is happening in Parliament. Britain's politicians have long since given up governing. Instead, they audition for public affection like contestants on a talent show where no one has talent. They switch policies mid-sentence, perform U-turns so fast you'd think the script changed in real time, and cling to power like it’s the last lifeboat on the Titanic. Spoiler alert: it is the Titanic.
These “leaders” don’t lead. They act. Badly. Like drama school dropouts with a budget. They pretend to run the country while civil servants, lobbyists, and random algorithms do the actual steering (into the iceberg). Principles? Outdated. Consistency? Unfashionable. Being on-message? Optional, depending on the latest polling.
Occasionally, the government rolls out a “new” initiative—usually one we’ve seen before, just with a new name and slightly shinier bins. Take the ever-reliable Knife Amnesty. Every few years, someone notices people are getting stabbed, and the solution is always the same: put out big metal boxes and hope criminals develop a conscience. Here’s the highlight reel:

· 2006: National campaign—people handed in a spoon.
· 2015 & 2020: Local drives. Mostly full of rusted garden tools.
· May 2024: Cambridgeshire’s "Sceptre Week"—because nothing says ‘safety’ like naming it after a medieval weapon.
· August–September 2024: “Zombie Knife Amnesty”—presumably targeting undead criminals.
Yet, the most common weapon in knife crime? Kitchen knives. That’s right. The same thing you used to butter toast is now part of a national security crisis. The obvious solution—stop and search—could work, if police were allowed to focus on actual crime hotspots. But alas, we have the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), a noble document that makes sure no one’s feelings are hurt while they're being mugged.

Thanks to Articles 8 and 14, police must:
· Avoid offending anyone while investigating violent assaults,
· Pretend that knife crime statistics are spread equally across every postcode, and
· Reassure everyone that profiling dangerous individuals is far worse than being stabbed by them.
Meanwhile, real policing is alive and well—on the internet. Say something mean online? Expect a squad car. Get burgled? Sorry, no units available. And if you do end up in court, justice is a lottery. You might get a judge who applies the law, or one who’s more interested in your gender pronouns and religious background than your criminal record.
Still, the show must go on. The BBC will keep rewriting history, the politicians will keep auditioning for their next season, and Britain will keep sinking—but rest assured, the deckchairs are being rearranged by committee.
