Two years ago in the Lok Sabha polls, Abhishek Banerjee got a 'lead' of 1.2 lakh votes from this Falta constituency!! It is proven once more that this party is nothing without the police. The so-called 'Diamond Harbour Model' was merely a model of extortion and plunder, wiping out the opposition across vast terrains under police patronage. Take away the police, and TMC ceases to exist.

The battle now is a direct face-off between the CPI(M) and the BJP.

The Supreme Court order invalidating discriminatory bail orders by the High Court and trial courts in Odisha that imposed bail conditions which forced Dalit-Adivasi accused to clean police stations is appreciable. That our courts, which are meant to uphold constitutional values, are instead enforcing judgements violating fundamental rights enshrined in Articles 14, 17, and 21 of the Constitution is a matter of deep concern.

What is even more concerning is that these degrading and humiliating punishments were inflicted on the accused ostensibly as punishment for their involvement in protests against the Vedanta mining project that threatens their land and livelihoods. The state judiciary was essentially criminalizing marginalized communities that are fighting for their constitutional rights. The Supreme Court itself did not intervene when the matter was brought to its attention around a year ago. Such grave lapses are unacceptable. It is the duty of the courts to ensure that they inspire confidence in those who come before them. Are they doing that?

Today marks the 208th birth anniversary of Karl Marx, the man who gave socialism a scientific foundation. Marx revolutionized the conception of world history and elucidated the relationship between capital and labour, laying the grounds for scientific socialism and the movement to overthrow capitalist society and liberate the modern proletariat, and thereby to end class rule, servitude, and exploitation. From Paris to Petrograd to Punnapra-Vayalar, his ideas have guided and galvanized revolutionary action to transform society. Marx's name will endure through the ages, and so also will his work.

The passing of renowned artist Raghu Rai is a great loss. He can arguably be recognized as the most celebrated photographer who used the camera with imagination, creativity, and vision. I fondly remember the moments I personally spent with him at various functions in Keralam and at his farmhouse outside Delhi. Through his work on events and individuals, he was, in a way, chiselling time itself. Respectful salutations to my dear friend Raghu Rai.
