In 1804, Usman dan Fodio declared jihad against the Hausa Kingdoms. By 1823, his emissaries had turned Ilorin, a Yoruba town into a Fulani emirate. By 1840, they marched on Osogbo, aiming for the coast. Only Ibadan's warriors stopped them at the Battle of Osogbo.

That was the FIRST Fulani expansion into Yorubaland. It came through INVITATION. Afonja, the Oyo general, invited Shehu Alimi's "warrior-scholars" to help him rebel against the Alaafin. They came as allies. They stayed as conquerors. Afonja was killed and burned to ashes.
