I remember how, during the 4 years of friendship and courting stages of knowing each other, my spouse would randomly say that everything people do in weddings, that she is not into those.

I would think it wasn’t that serious. But both of us being people who were not into attending weddings unless we were really close to the couple played a huge role in how we ended up doing ours.

My spouse, back then, would always say that she fantasized a lot as a kid and young girl, and that she would prefer a wedding on a weekday, evening, with just her siblings, parents, and the same from her husband’s family, while every other person is at work.

When it was clear that we were doing this thing called marriage, as a man I started paying attention to these wishes and saw how important such a mindset will be.

Till today, what we did in Abuja, people in our circle still call us vintage gangsta couple, and that we did a tiny but rich fun gangsta wedding. 😂😆

Someday, I will tell you about it here. Maybe younger ones can copy that and keep breaking the norm of wasting money in the name of weddings.

You think you know plenty… until you Japa. 😂

One thing Japa does very well, especially when you’re older, is humble you in unexpected ways.

Back home, you may be the “go-to” person. The one who reads, researches, fixes things, gives advice, and seems knowledgeable about life, all of which I thought I was. You feel exposed. Informed. Street-smart. DIY-minded.

Then you travel abroad… and boom.....You realize there’s a whole different way people live, think, interact, work, and even do simple everyday things.

Some things you were respected for knowing, back home? You suddenly discover there are more accurate ways of doing them here. From etiquette to social interaction, technology, machines, systems, and basic routines, you start unlearning and relearning.

And in those quiet moments, you just stay constantly telling yourself: “Guy, calm down… You be Olodo-Dundee-United. You no know Jack.” 😂

As Oyinbo people talk am say: ''Travel really is another form of education''. You won't totally understand this saying till you do! Even if it is travelling around, locally, where you are! That old Ghanaian Highlife song by the Super 7 Band, which my Dad and Uncles loved to play, suddenly always rings in my head now. I even went and found it on YouTube. I play it time to time nowadays as a reminder! It makes sense now: “Landlord, Travel and See.”😄

Moving to a new place, whether it’s across the street or across the sea, is no small thing. Yet somehow, we humans tend to treat it like it’s just another item on the to-do list. Pack. Ship. Go. Done. But let’s be honest: it’s never just about the boxes.

Relocation is a full-body experience. It doesn’t just change your address, it rearranges your soul. Spiritually, emotionally, psychologically, and even physically, you’re being reprogrammed. And most of the time, we don’t even realize it’s happening. Someone once said we force the universe, or our Chi, to grant our wishes by asking consistently, believing deeply, and taking bold action. Sounds a lot like faith.

As my people say: “Onye kwe, Chi ya ekwe”, (if you agree, your God agrees too). And also: “Anaghi ano ofu ebe ekiri mmonwu” - (You don’t sit in one place to watch masquerades). Translation? Life’s magic doesn’t come to the couch. You’ve got to move.

We’re not meant to stay stuck. We’re wired to wander. Some of your biggest dreams, deepest healing, and wildest breakthroughs are waiting for you in a place you haven’t been yet. And by “place,” I don’t just mean geography. I mean your mindset. Your emotional landscape. Your habits. Your perspective. Sometimes, the only way to meet your potential is to change your scenery and your story.

Relocating brings more than new neighbors and a different grocery store. It brings: New people (some weird, some wonderful). New dreams (some wild, some wise). 9 months in Canada 🇨🇦, here’s the truth nobody packages nicely: If you have the means to move… move.

Not because abroad is heaven (it’s not). But because of what it quietly does to your mind. Back home in the Bongo (I lived in a decent area of Abuja in the last 17 years), sometimes your biggest struggle isn’t your ability, it’s your environment (Nigeria as a whole). Basic things fight you daily. Power. Systems. Structure. Little frustrations that pile up and slowly drain your focus, your energy, your ambition.

You don’t even realize how much it’s costing you… until you step out. Then suddenly, your head clears. You begin to think in straight lines again. Your goals stop feeling like distant wishes… and start looking like actual plans. You can map things: timelines, skills, steps, outcomes. For once, it feels measurable.

But here’s where I keep it real with my friends: Moving abroad is not magic. It’s not a fast track to “make it.” If anything, it forces you to be brutally honest with yourself. At your age, with your current capacity…
What can you realistically achieve? How long will it take you to upskill? What are you willing to sacrifice?

If you come with greed, wanting everything at once, you’ll frustrate yourself fast. But if you come with clarity, patience, and consistency? Different story.

Because in an environment that mostly works, your effort finally has a fair chance. Your health, your discipline, your time? they start to compound properly.
And that right there? That’s the real win. Not just money. Not just comfort. But the freedom to pursue your ambition without your environment constantly pulling you backwards.

So when I say, “if you can move, move”…I’m not selling a dream. I’m sharing a shift. From survival thinking…
