CBP is pausing all construction activity in Big Bend National Park while I visit and conduct a personal, on-the-ground evaluation.

CBP is firmly committed to protecting America,  and that includes our national treasures like Big Bend National Park (BBNP). We know the current and predictable national security threats and they are real.  Now over the next couple of days, I will join a small team to evaluate the terrain and listen to local leadership, community members and stakeholders to ensure that we secure our borders while simultaneously protecting BBNP for generations to come.

@CBPCommissioner Mr Scott: You have repeatedly said what they’re currently doing in BBNP is not “construction.” If this means ceasing all activity in BBNP, we appreciate it. KBBW is hopeful this is not yet another creative use of language that obscures the real intent. #keepbigbendwild

@travisbubenik @JohnCornyn @SecMullinDHS This is in the right direction but CBP’s planned desecration of Big Bend Nat Park and the Rio Grande Wild & Scenic River downstream involves far more than “physical barriers.” In the national park alone, CBP intends 205 miles of “system attributes” w/miles of new patrol road.
