@tunkuv 1️⃣ I teach a college class called Citizenship, Nationalism & Identity, which discusses history as a governmental tool to shape citizens' identity. Spain is the clearest example I can offer my students: Franco's views still reign supreme in the minds of most monolingual Spaniards.

@flr_louis Mr. Reid doesn't understand Catalonia's "dissatisfaction." In 2017 peaceful voters were brutally beaten up in a referendum on independence. The Catalan government was sent to jail or forced into exile. More than 4,000 people remain charged, some sentenced and in jail.

@tunkuv @tunkuv I was brought up in a society that glorified Franco and I can assure you that within Spain the victors did write the history. Outside Spain, Franco’s regime was whitewashed from the 50s onwards: by Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford and many others … in the name of geopolitics 🧐
