A few quotes on metrics:
"Tell me how you measure me, and I will tell you how I will behave." -Goldratt
"It is wrong to suppose that if you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it – a costly myth.” (Deming [The New Economics])`
“You can only measure three percent of what matters” (Deming, quoted by Peter Senge)
"Eliminate management by objective. Eliminate management by numbers, numerical goals. Substitute leadership." (Deming's "Fourteen Points for Management" from 'Out of the Crisis', 1982)
"What gets measured gets managed - even when it’s pointless to measure and manage it, and even if it harms the purpose of the organization to do so." (attributed to Drucker)
“Managers who don’t know how to measure what they want settle for wanting what they can measure.” - Russell Ackoff
Goodhart's law: "When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure".
@MattHotle@allenholub I’d disagree with you slightly, Matt, I think those people hiring big agencies aren’t really interested in transforming their organization, they want the consultants to come in and “fix” the organization without really transforming themselves at all.
I flagged this a long time ago with intentions to write a blog on it. Finally got to that today. Thanks to @allenholub for keeping me thinking about why and how we do things.
Psychological safety must be an organizational attribute to be effective. If safety exists only within the team, it’s impossible to address any problems that are not strictly within the team (i.e. most of them).

Interesting perspective on the challenge facing the Huskers. Seems like they have the physical talent at QB to win a lot of games, but everything falls apart because of game management. How do the Huskers improve game management (for both players and coaches)?
“I don’t think there is a lot of time. I think there is the impression that they (coaching staff) is going to have five years. They aren’t going to have five years. You have to win. It’s getting to the point where things are accelerating very quickly in the sport.
You’re trying to build this 450 million dollar Memorial Stadium expansion, all this other stuff. I don’t think you can scuttle around at 5-7, 5-7, 7-5, and year four it gets done. It seems hard to me. If you want 6-6, I think you can get it done with Chubba Purdy, provided he stays healthy.
If you want to get better than that, 9-3 or 10-2, then you’re probably looking for someone with minimum 2 years starting experience somewhere else, which Jeff Sims had, and accuracy and completion rate over 60.
The ability to run but moreover the ability to manage the game. Throw from the pocket. Make guys make plays. Most of Jeff Sims teammates liked him as a leader, so that wasn’t an issue.”
