I am thrilled to announce, our latest research on the factors influencing spider venom potency has been published in Biology Letters! https://t.co/nX1t6TqtVz Big thank you to my supervisors @healyke and @Michel_Dugon along with the media team @uniofgalway for spreading the word!
The final research chapter of my PhD is published! 🥳🥳🥳🥳 It shows how the ability of spider venom to paralyse prey scales isometrically with its ability to cause prey mortality! Open access in Toxicon: X. Check it out via the following link -https://t.co/iH2vNqxpTV
The implications of this finding are that it suggests historically available LD50 or median lethal dose values can function as proxies for PD50 of median paralysis dose values to gauge general venom potency in spiders, provided the venom was tested in the same prey model!
I want to thank my two PhD supervisors @healyke and @Michel_Dugon for their guidance and @Dayle_leonard_ , @LeonaMcsharry, Michael Martindale, @SaucyProcess, Aiste Vitkauskaite and JP Dunbar for their help with spider/venom collection and testing. Everyone's help was crucial!
Congratulations to our very own University of Galway zoologist, founder of the Venom Lab and creator of The Bug Doctor series, Dr @Michel_Dugon who has been named Galway Science Person of the Year!
Dr Dugon has spent more than 14 years inspiring children and students across Galway schools and beyond with his live workshops on bugs, spiders and snakes, as well as through his important ongoing scientific research.

Big W for habitat management and spider fans! Rediscovering such a cool UK spider after 40 years of absence on the Isle of Wight! Well done Graeme and Mark! #spider#IsleofWight#rediscovery https://t.co/FSD1nv2ina
Spider webs come in a range of forms, with some spider webs being used for many years and others being rebuilt each day. The latter often eat their old webs as they dismantle them, but why?

Latest publication from the Dugon Venom Systems Lab: A review exploring the occurence of envenoming-led infections, suggesting that we need to study the microbiome of venomous organisms a lot more closely if we want to improve post-envenoming care. https://t.co/zNwt7nSXb9
I recently had the pleasure of presenting my research at University of Galway’s Zoology Colloquium 2025!
This was a great opportunity to present the work I've done since the launch of the Urban Fox Survey, which has been a very successful project thanks to everyone's support! 🦊
Can dragonflies bite? Can dragonflies sting? Are dragonflies dangerous? They're all common questions - read on to find out the answers!

Big thank you to @RSocPublishing for promoting my recent research on spider venom potency, recently published in Biology Letters but also for inviting me to discuss said research through their "Ecology & Evolution Seminar Series" https://t.co/UWwI6gKoB5 https://t.co/RoOJpZJU7b

Galway, I need your help!🦊
I'm collecting field data on foxes to compare with our citizen science survey and look for any correlations
For best results, I need everyone to be reporting the foxes they spot in Galway city, you would be helping me massively! 🧡
Not all dinosaurs were lumbering giants, some were streamlined speedsters that would have given today’s fastest animals a run for their money…

FUCK YEAH FUCK TRUMP
In response to Trump’s cuts to science research funding and attacks on universities, the EU is investing over $500 million to recruit researchers and scientists from the U.S.
@drivetimerte@wlrfm@Galwaybayfmnews Big thank you to the media crew @uniofgalway for their assistance in spreading the good word also!

Big thanks to all media outlets that have covered our recently published work on spider venom potency thus far! I have been blow away by the interest and support everyone has showed. Grateful to @drivetimerte@wlrfm and @Galwaybayfmnews for having me on their shows on Thursday.
Our latest contribution to the world of arachnology and venom studies, freshly published in Biology Letters. Congratulations to @KeithLNotions for leading this exciting study!
