AUSTIN MAN points a handgun at a group of stranded motorists changing a flat tire at 1 a.m., demands their money, then rams their car.

The victims fought back and wrestled him to the ground. His accomplice picked the gun up off the pavement and fired a shot into the air. The two took off, ramming a second car and crashing into a market before running into the dark.

They left a cellphone at the scene. Notifications kept popping up on the screen with an email address that led police straight to Karl Musgrove, 52.

Nine hours later, callers reported a man fighting with someone while trying to steal a car on East 7th. Officers searched almost an hour and found Musgrove hiding underneath a vehicle with 24 grams of meth in his waistband. He told them he was a five-star general in the Bloods and repeatedly threatened to have the arresting officer and his family "erased."

He was out on parole at the time.

His record, starting with his first arrest in 1991 at age 17:

• Arrests across multiple Texas counties
• Multiple felony prison sentences

35 years of convictions, and he was still on the street at 1 a.m. with a gun robbing people.
