Teach criminal law at University of Adelaide. Research on connection between military service and criminal offending and PhD on prosecutorial discretion.
@ayagruber@NYDailyNews Under Sth Aust law you can't consent to sex if 'intoxicated whether by alcohol or other substance or combination of substances to the point of being incapable of freely and voluntarily agreeing'. It has not led to unjust convictions for rape - conviction rates are still very low
@_LisaParker I think it's absolutely the right decision at this stage. If the evidence for mens rea turns out to be lacking then by all means consider manslaughter but surely it's not in the public interest to decline to prosecute murder just because he concealed his wife's death for 46 years
RESILIENCE WITHIN - 4 MEN, 80 YEARS OF PRISON
On 4 January 2020 Henry Keogh, Brett Williams, Bill Davis, Kirby Brownlow look at the nature of incarceration, re-integrating into society, and what it took to forgive, modify behaviour and believe in change. https://t.co/Zr7bXUnXZq
@FizzgigGM She is a gem. Ive loved her since the D Generation in the 80s and admire her writing, comedy, authenticity and activism but am sad to see her advertising UberEats. I hope she sees Ken Loach's new movie Sorry We Missed You or otherwise reflects on the exploitative gig economy.
Brilliant moment in itself and doubly brilliant because it reminds me of the older couple Abbott met in the hardware store in 2011.

A friend of mine worked for him and told the story that everyone laughed because John had a roll of stamps for work letters and another roll he bought for personal letters. I always thought that was a small but significant sign of integrity. Another era indeed. Vale
@steve_mcdee @jeremy_gans At least the SA name makes sense - more descriptive than extended common purpose. As for the actual doctrine and its application to “Offence Where Unlawfully Supplied Firearm Used in Subsequent Offence” ......
@jeremy_gans @steve_mcdee The Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement advocates for diminished responsibility in SA but there is no broad support, and we still have the unmodified common law on provocation - for now although the AG has indicated an intention to abolish it
@jeremy_gans @steve_mcdee Recklessness as to causing GBH (particularly) is a much lower mental state than most lay or legal people would associate with murder
I listened to a few crim ones and they are great - both content and tone. I especially loved the discussion of R v Brown. I will provide links to that and the one on sport and assault for our crim students. I disagree that @james_pattison has edited out your bad jokes though!
@CrimeLineLaw @JPinaSanchez @SentencingAcad@BarristerSecret Australian juris publish sentencing remarks - but only for 4 weeks. The rationale is that Ds should not be stigmatised for life - I agree - but open justice and research into sentencing trends would benefit from ongoing availability. Link to SA remarks: https://t.co/dS5mxXikWY
@MicrobialMe I work at @UniofAdelaide and we were not given information about this case but did have sessions from Human Resources stressing that bullying would not be tolerated irrespective of how successful someone is as a researcher - which I think is great for culture and morale
Geoff Muecke was dismissed from the Supreme Court of Nauru for granting a permanent stay of this prosecution, castigating the government, and ordering costs against it. He uses it for powerful talks on the rule of law and judicial independence to @Adel_Law_School students.
CLANT supports the Nauru 19. Their trial was a farce, and their sentences are a disgrace. Members of Nauru 19 jailed over 2015 protests https://t.co/sBayUk5CTV via @ABCNews
#OPINION Organisations that work with men and women who have served in the Australian military have been concerned that high numbers of ex-service men have contact with the criminal justice system, write Kellie Toole and Elaine Waddell. #auslaw https://t.co/X0eZQD94HW
@_LisaParker@jeremy_gans Seems Ive done reasonably well in constraining him because the references to Morris dancing are now much less flagrant. Unfortunately, Ive have had 0 success in getting him to refer to female people as women not ladies.
@Trish_Corry Can't go past @JimmyBarnes in an Aussie crisis - and 'Id Die to be with You Tonight' says it all
