@ryanmwalters 2/2 I even take groceries to Suzie’s house. Groceries paid for from my own paycheck. I encourage Suzie and help her get basic hygiene items at school. Suzie continues to perform low academically. So now my paycheck is going to suffer bc Suzie performs low?

@ryanmwalters 1/2 Scenario: Suzie is enrolled in my class. Suzie lives w/her drug addict mom & abusive step dad. Suzie works every night to provide food for herself & her two younger siblings. Suzie attends class, but struggles. I refer Suzie per protocol.

@johnnaisaacs @ryanmwalters Has happened. As a teacher, I have had administrators tell teachers not to say it. Instead, we were to say, “Happy Holidays.” This occurred at a district where I formerly taught.

I feel like schools need to be more robust in not being the cure-all for all societal challenges. Expectations seem to have risen way beyond education, what we all have trained in.We can be a hub, we can signpost to other agencies, we can support, but we can't fix everything.
